WLM 2011

I downloaded the new WLM 2011 and found I hated it. I really liked the
older 2009 version and I just could not uninstall the newer 2011 version
so I downloade Thunderbird and I'll it as it is more like the older
outlook express that I did like years ago.

Welcome to the TB club. I, like you, tried WLM with Win7, but found it
too unreliable, as it frequently failed to post. IMO it wasn't as good
as OE6 under XP. And if MS isn't going to fix the "show previous post"
issue (ie it doesn't show anything, even a ">" for previous text), that
makes it unusable. Remember also that MS has no interest in Usenet news
now - it prefers its own forums where it has full control.

TB isn't perfect, but it is better than WLM.

Me three. What I really wanted was OE6, but the closest proximity I
could find is TB 2. It has the added advantage of being available in a
portable version.

I find myself sticking to older versions with a lot of programs.

good - you may be able to help me. I am thinking of using TB but:
Can you have more than one hotmail address at the same time?
Can you make your own stationery & signatures?
Had a quick look but could not find out so I uninstalled it. TIA

60 seconds with Google tells me the answers are yes, yes, and yes.

I don't know about hotmail, but I have multiple POP3/SMTP accounts with
the same server. You can make your own signatures (as I have here), but
I don't know about stationery. I'm a text only guy.

I'm really a newbie when it comes to Thunderbird. I suggest subscribing
to the
mozilla.support.thunderbird group on the news.mozilla.org server. That's
where
I go for answers.

Yes, either all delivered into a single inbox, or kept separate.
Can you make your own stationery
Dunno, why would you want to? html formatted email is evil.
signatures?
Out of the box, you can have one signature per identity, and multiple
identities per account. If you want random sigs, or to select sigs from
your own list, there are extensions for that.

Thanks everyone - when more time is available I'll give definitely give TB a
try.

Don't use it for newsgroups until they (the people at Microsoft) fix the
plain text reply posting which is broken. Instead try Thunderbird for
newsgroups - it's free for the download.

What's broken? It works fine here.

You can also move WindowsMail to W-7 and remove WindowsLiveMail. A quick
Google will show that many people hate WLM. We did so I loved WM from my
Vista PC to my W-7 PC.

From what I see a lot of the changes in W-7 were not for the better. Now MS
doesn't even give us an email/Usenet client. WLM is installed by HP before
they sell their PCs. Have you tried moving OE6 to your W-7 PC? It would
have to go into the (x86) folder.

Copy WindowsMail from a friend's Vista PC and move it to your W-7 PC. I
used a flash drive. Maybe MS will smarten up and add WM to W-7 in the
future.

Actually I ended up taking thunderbird off the machine as I could not get
it to filter out frank and alias. The message filters didn't seem to show
any easy to use kill file filters so I put wlm back on this machine. I
prefer wlm 2009 but can't find any download on microsoft. All I find is this
2011 version which I don't like but I have figured out most of it but I
can't get it to quote when I reply to newsgroup posts. Have to do it
manually.

But at least my kill filters make this an alias and frank free experience.

How do you get it to quote without doing it by hand?

I left your response unquoted.

You can always glance at the "From" column and make your own mind up.
Very, very occasionally, when they remember to take their meds, Frank
and Alias can come up with useful posts.

That's because you're using an old version (14.0.8089.726). When MS
updated that they screwed up the reply delimiter (>), so when you get
multiple replies in a newsgroup posting it is impossible to tell who
posted what!

Frank and Alias who? The filters are crude and awkward, but they can be
made to work. My killfile, pioneered by Alias and Frank, is up to over
50 entries.

Hi Jeff:

AFAICT, your above reply is not marked off with the character '>'. This, to
all intents and purposes, breaks the thread. While WLM 2011 works with HTML
posting, I am doing this in plain text. The news server I am using accepts
only plain text posts and replies, so the news reader must be able to handle
working in plain text. AFAICT, plain text replies are broken in WLM 2011 so
far to date. 'Using the latest version I could get my hands on: Version 2011
(Build 15.4.3502.0922).

Thanks,
LS

I'm not sure what's going on with your WLM 15.4.3502.922. Your reply to
my mail is in pale grey as I read it in Thunderbird and didn't show at
all in this reply (I copied and pasted the above text between the [ ]
so you could see it. If you look at the posts before your reply, you
will see that they are all indented with >>>, >>, and > from my last
post. I always try to post (and read) in plain text.

If you look at the the reply from Dave "Crash" Dummy to my reply to the
Original Post from Lee Waun yesterday, what do you see? Are there any >?
