Why doesn't Google Groups add this alt.windows7.general?

Why doesn't Google Groups add this alt.windows7.general? I miss going
back and looking for old posts. It is also useful to use Google
Groups when the computer I access Usenet is down.

Bear in mind that if you connect from googlegroups an increasing number
of people are filtering out all googlegroups traffic. Nearly all the
trolls post from there, so it's very useful to the rest of us - one
simple filter and they're all gone. Sadly, so is anyone who isn't
causing trouble - but you can't have it all ways.

It's been quite a few years since I used Google Groups for anything. I
much prefer to keep my own archives for the groups I'm interested in.
Therefore, it doesn't bother me whether GG carries this group or not.

Hopefully, that's a very rare event. Computers still aren't as
reliable as a stone these days, but downtime seems to be quite
uncommon.

It depends on the groups, of course, but that could be a *lot* of disk
space.

And the Googlegroups web site has a much better searching facility
than Agent does.

I'm glad it's not on Google, bunch of idiots posting through it.

I use Forte Agent as my news reader, it keeps all prior messages in a
database - my very own archive for subbed groups.

I've never had problems with Agent's search. What's up on your side?

Exactly the problem with Microsoft Answers fora.

I suspect he meant he just keeps the posts that are of
interest/relevance to him, not all posts.

That may be a good thing.

Personally, I only archive my sent messages (quarterly) and a few posts worthy of long term storage... once done, I reset all
groups, download the last 100 then Catch Up.

No, I keep everything. As Ken frequently points out, it's a few
pennies worth of disk space.

It's not a matter of problems with Agent's search. It's a matter of
the difference in flexibility of the two searches. Look at
http://groups.google.com/a/webmproject.org/advanced_search?q=& and see
how much more flexible the googlegroups search can be.
I see what you mean. I don't know how to make Agent search for
different languages, but since all of my subscribed groups use
English, it hasn't been a problem. The rest of the searchable criteria
seem to be handled by Agent just fine.

If it works for you, fine. But I wouldn't be happy with it.

Just curious, how much disk space is it (in GB, not pennies)?

I'm currently archiving 43 groups and using 1.83 GB. Text groups don't
take much disk space at all, which is why the premium NNTP providers
all have something like 5+ years worth.

Since the same things can be accomplished either way, I suspect you'd
be fine with it, as I am. ;-)

It sure is just a few pennies worth. Much less than I thought it would
be! I'd like to see how much space what I have at the moment (33
groups) is, but I don't know where to look. Can you point me to the
right place?

I use 2.0 and you apparently use 6.0, so there could be differences,
but try this. Go to the folder where you installed Agent and look for
a series of DAT files that have corresponding IDX files. With some
exceptions, each of those DAT files is one group.

Thanks, but that was where I had looked and didn't find them. It must
be different in the different versions.
