Windows needs a retract CD function

This parrot is dead :)

No, it's just pining for the fjords.
Lovely plumage, though.

I have the exact problem. If I am REALLY fast, I can put the
disc in the tray befor it closes, but I finally just started
grabbing it and not letting go until the disc is in place. Sigh.
Well, blow me, that cured mine. I've been loth to just grab it because
of the crunchy-crunchy noises it makes. I have sometimes quickly dropped
a disc in on the move but they sometimes go askew and jam the tray half
open; then I have to yank it open.

Anyway here's what I did.
I held the tray when it had come out and closed my ears to the
crunchy-crunchy sounds and the pull of the mechanism. Then I closed it
with the button and it made cruchy-crunchy noises while closed. I
switched the power off, left it ten secs, swiched back on and it was
still making crunchy-crunchy sounds. I pressed the button and it opened
and stayed open. No crunchy-crunchy sounds. I did that a few more times,
switched off and on, did it some more. Put a CD in, played it, beautiful!

Thanks, Ed

off the floor, 2 computers on a tiny coffee table to the
left, 17" CRT (LCDs suck)
No, LCDs don't suck. I will never use a CRT anything again.

No but all cd drive tray loaders are belt driven in some way some you cant
see unless you take the drive apart:)

No belts on mine. The two I have in my PC and the really old one (~10
years) I have on a shelf are all gear driven. Or did I misconstrue
something due to the lack of punctuation ;-)

You are wrong on both counts all optical drives have a belt driven tray
system.
the optics are direct drive only.
I build sell service and consult I know this for a fact.

A

Andy

Ask any drive maker.
thats why the maker puts an open/close buttion on the drive face:)

A

Andy

Uumm yes i build sell service and consult .
been doing it for 30 years i know its a fact i see drives with ruined tray
belts all the time.
some drives are built better then others and hold up better.

A

Andy

as for the key board reply you can still order the key board from hp parts.
they just don't ship the more costly key board with the low end pc's any
more.
I own 3 elite pc's all 2011 models and all have the full featured key boards
but the elite series is the top of the line also.

It's a bit of a shame that you don't appear to have a clue what you're
talking about then isn't it?

S

SC Tom

I have had many a PC CD drive apart and still don't recall any belts.

Sorry Andy, I have to spill the beans on you since I've been reading
your posts in the .roadrunner and .sprintpcs newsgroups for what seems
like a dozen years. You live in a small backwater town in Maine, you
work the night shift (janitor? security guard?) at a mall, and you
only have access to someone's computer late at night during one of
your breaks. You've claimed to have degrees from both Harvard and Yale
and you've claimed to own multiple houses. That's just the tip of the
iceberg, but I think it's enough to draw the conclusion that you don't
have a clue.

You neither build, sell, or service computers, nor do you consult.

Tell you what. Find yourself one of those optical drives with a
belt-driven tray, disassemble it, and take some photos. Post the
photos somewhere, then post links here. Guess what, you won't be able
to do it because the optical drives built during the last 25+ years
have had gear-driven trays.

The other thing you're wrong about is that gently nudging the tray to
close it will cause issues down the road. It won't.

[Apologies for the top post.]

You do know what a "belt" is, right?

Andy, you made the claim, it's up to you to support it. Admittedly,
supporting it would be easier if it were true, but go ahead and give
it a shot anyway.

No drivers for Win7.

I have an Elite series PC and the keyboard is p/n 505060-371 which will
not open or close the CD tray.

As per HP's website, it's standard on all Elite series PC (Elite series
is no longer, they're replaced with the HPE series.)

Your comments are becomming less and less credible.

You do know what a "belt" is, right?
Funny, I was going to say much the same to SC Tom - as a joke, in that
case :)

Time for a belt (my preference is bourbon).

I was going to suggest that maybe Andy had already had a few and that's why
he thinks of 'belts.' ;-) But I think Char pretty much covered that aspect
LOL!

its a bit of a shame you aren't smart enough to look in you're CD /DVD drive
and see the tiny motor with the belt drive pulley for the tray loader.

ok hawk the second i have 4 systems all less then a year old and all have
belt drive cd/trays.
