No, LCDs don't suck. I will never use a CRT anything again.

same here, cannot stand the look of the CRT screen anymore, I have one
CRT 15" monitor left, it's surrounded by other things in the spare room,
I could not be bothered to drag the thing out to test a suspect dead
screen on a old laptop, instead bought a new 18.5" led screen, nice and
clear, very sharp and great colour.

Post the make and model of one that does, and I'll look it up. If you are
correct, I will agree with you.

the optics are direct drive only.
I build sell service and consult I know this for a fact.
Wow, such a tempest in a teapot. Could it possibly be that there are
both direct gear drive and belt drive tray mechanisms in use today?

Here's a good photo of a direct gear drive optical drive tray
mechanism (happens to be from an older TDK CD-RW drive):
http://www.pcdoctor-guide.com/wordpress/images/cdrwimg_2D_2813_29.jpg
Look at the upper-right corner of the drive at the assembly of gears
that engage the tray - not a belt in sight, from the electric motor on
the left to the teeth on the tray itself... And a close-up for the
visually impaired (though it doesn't show the tray itself in this
shot):

Full disassembly of the drive can be seen at
http://www.pcdoctor-guide.com/wordpress/?p=1396

And on the other side of the debate, here's one that uses a belt -
take a look at this CD-RW drive mechanism (scroll to the bottom of the
page): http://www.josepino.com/computer/removing-cd-dvd-cover

Granted, both seem to be a bit on the older side but all the same,
seems like either type of mechanism could still be in use by one
manufacturer or another...

Cheers!

its a bit of a shame you aren't smart enough to look in you're CD /DVD drive
and see the tiny motor with the belt drive pulley for the tray loader.
And it's a bit of a shame you haven't learnt not to top-post yet.

FYI, I have several drives in front of me - none of them have belt
driven trays (to be fair, they are laptop drives, but you did stipulate
that *all* optical drives have belt driven trays). I also have an
ancient Plexwriter here that has a gear driven tray - however, I expect
that you'll be back in a moment to tell me that they're all figments of
my imagination - what with you being such an "expert".

Peculiar, graphic artists and other industry professionals
continue to prefer using CRT's of high quality (yes, they can
still be found, but not in BestBuy). Peculiar, isn't it?

While they have certainly improved from the pathetic garbage of
even 5 years ago, Dye to the technology used, the LCD image is
incapable of displaying a proper image. Its ONLY advantage over
a good CRT (besides relatively unimportant things like being 1
or 2 inches thick) is the total absence of geometric distortion.

But that's OK, progress! Progress! Progress!

all case drivs are belt driven have been for the last 20 years or so
Nope, you're still wrong.

Oh yeah, whilst we're at it, multiple abuse reports sent to Giganews for
your repeated insistance of posting binaries in a non-binaries group.

WFT are you on about? You answered this post (incorrectly) yesterday.
Perhaps you could ask somone to wipe the spittle and drool from the
corners of your mouth, then take your own advice and go do a bit of
research.

don't have belts humm someone needs to go back to school doesn't she.
loser look at the picture belt drive optical drive YOU ARE WRONG once
again.
No-one here has claimed that optical drives don't have belts. You on
the other hand have insisted that *all* optical drives have belt driven
trays. You are still worng though.

100 % right i have had a computer since they first came out .
I assume you had a Z1 back in 1936 then?

You're older than imagined, so I'll put your inaccurate rantings down to
senility.

The other thing you're wrong about is that gently nudging the tray to
close it will cause issues down the road. It won't.
An honest question here, not intended to give aid and comfort to
Andy: how do we know?
[Apologies for the top post.]
Then why? :)

Ah yes, but at least we understand punctuation, capitalisation and good
grammar.
