No, I haven't forgotten. I believe you when you say you used to apply
security fixes to your OS, but I see absolutely no signs that you
understood why you were doing it, or that you understand why you
should continue to do it.
Just the opposite Char. I monitor my Internet traffic. And I noticed the
more up-to-date your OS is, the more data mining takes place. Some
argues that it is such things as gadgets checking for updates, Microsoft
checking for pirates, etc. Well whatever, the traffic increases with the
more updated your OS is.
The primary threat used to be that your data would be lost as a result
of malware, so in years past keeping your security profile current was
an attempt to safeguard your data. Current malware rarely takes that
approach, preferring instead to make sure the PC owner never notices
anything amiss while the malware mines personal data or lies in wait
to be commanded as part of a botnet.
All made possible due to recent updates. As Microsoft can only monitor
and know about your system only if you have installed the latest
updates.

Funny if updates is as important as you lemmings think it is. Then why
does Microsoft has often left a known security hole open for about 2
years or so? That is what bothers me about all of this. If Microsoft
sets such a low priority on security updates, it can't be very
important. And through experimentation and reseach, I found the very
same thing. Apparently Microsoft had know this long before I did.
These days, keeping your systems and network secure has as much to do
about safeguarding your personal information, (rather than
safeguarding it from intentional damage), as well as ensuring that
your systems don't become a threat to the rest of the systems that
share the Internet with you.
I have tools which monitor all of these threats. I don't believe you
need to install updates and then close your eyes and believe you are
secure, just like a good lemming.

For example, in the past 4 hours, my computer sent out 2.8MB worth of
data. Which the data contains one website request, email polling, and
newsgroup polling. Yet nothing else has taken place. But since you are a
very good lemming, you probably have no idea what your system is sending
out, do you?
By ignoring security updates, you've essentially turned your
unprotected systems into a modern day form of Typhoid Mary. I don't
care if your personal information is stolen because of your failure to
apply security updates, but I do care that you're putting the rest of
us at higher risk because of your foolishness.
Just the opposite. Remember when Microsoft was ordered to break itself
into pieces for being found as a monopoly? But I believe that lawsuit
was used to scare Microsoft into submission. I never believed that
monopoly claim since we still had Linux and Apple too. And if anybody is
a monopoly, it is Apple. As you can't create a Mac clone without going
to jail or have your bank account wiped out.

Anyway everything suddenly changed for Microsoft and they didn't have to
break up. It seemed clear there was some secret deals made between the
government and Microsoft. And it seems clear that Microsoft has placed
secret backdoors into its updates that the CIA can access.

Sounds good on the surface to go after the bad guys. But it often is
used on the good guys as well. The CIA software based on early versions
of "Promis" was just one we know about.

Inslaw - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Inslaw

Remember the CIA has no oversight. And no other part of government has
any control over what it does, not even the President of the United
States. Remember that JFK had a plan to break the CIA up and was found
dead weeks later. What a coincidence, eh? As the CIA is free to spend as
much as they like and to do what they please. And when found guilty of a
crime in a court of law, they totally blow it off and nothing is ever
done about it. Funny how that works, eh?

The voice of reason...in the wilderness :)

I have other thoughts in mind, but it seems prudent to drop it all and
just go quietly back to my lemming encampment.

Ah... ignorance is bliss! And it gives you that warm and fuzzy feeling
all over, doesn't it Gene?

I predicted it would quickly become exhausting and he proved me right.
I can deal with ignorance and I can somewhat deal with stubbornness,
but when someone is clueless and determined to stay that way it just
wears me down. I may need to seek out a lemming bar to get a
refreshing lemming drink. :)

I was talking about malware and I hoped that you were, too. My hopes
were dashed, however.

Just because I predicted that it would be difficult to have this
discussion with you doesn't mean you had to prove me right.

While I am sitting here monitoring everything that is going in and out
to the Internet and you talk about my security ignorance? You can't be
serious? And you actually pretend to know something about security? And
you still pretend to not to be a real lemming? So how long do you think
you can pull off this charade?

No! *All* evidence points to you have no substantial knowledge and are
nothing more than a lemming. As if you knew something, you would have
said something by now.

I must say it is fascinating studying you less knowledgeable people.
Although it is always fascinating why lemmings all jump off of the cliff
together too. If common sense was truly common, there would be no such
thing as lemmings, now would there be?

Lemmingade?
I wasn't sure at the time. It could have been lemmingade or perhaps
tea with a wedge of lemming. In the end it was more mundane - just a
regular Coke (in the white can) with no lemming at all.

If you are such an expert. why don't you answer any questions? Like if
Windows updates are as important as you claim, why does it take
Microsoft sometimes 2 years or so to plug known holes? I claim Microsoft
does so because they know secretly that security updates is not the way
to secure a system. And thus why they set such a low priority for them.

So what is your reason? I am open to suggestions. But you have not had
anything at all. Not good for an intelligent discussion. So what do you
really know? So you totally ignore the evidence. Nobody who is truthful
ignores the evidence. At least I can't think of any reason. If you are
not truthful, well then there are tons of reasons then.

Well, now we have the explicit expression of the "I'm superior to all
you lesser mortals" fantasy.

I've seen this before. So far, it's been mildly entertaining, but if you
guys encourage Bill by trying to help him cure his ignorance, it will
get nasty.

Prove it Wolf! Without proof, it won't be allowed in a court of law.
Which I am sure you want to avoid. But people who are not smart, won't
go anyway.

OK, you drink a greater variety of stuff than I do & even know about,
which is why I showed such a lack of imagination. :)

Now tell me why my Android phone sometimes stops accepting touches on
part or all of its interface, and I will be happy. Reset to factory or
by an iPhone are about the only alternatives left, and I don't like
either one ;-)

Time to stop being silly and OT - I'm gonna go watch some TV & unwind
(but that's pretty silly and OT as well).

Because I'd do a lot better by having this conversation with my dog.
At least she doesn't bring up irrational conspiracy theories at the
drop of a hat.

Are we done here?

Yet no evidence of your claims. How dumb can you be? You know how many
people in history can do nothing more than ad hominem attacks? You know
what Einstein would say:

"Condemnation without investigation is the height of ignorance." ~
Albert Einstein

But you probably think Einstein was ignorant too. After all, he was
dyslexic and was kicked out of the German school system and was told he
was too stupid to do anything besides going to a trade school.

Dogs are great lemmings. And you are a damn good lemming. So yes, you
two are perfect. I totally understand why you can't comment about why
Microsoft sometimes takes about two years to plug a security hole
(nothing to do with conspiracy theories). After all, anybody who doesn't
know what they are talking about can't.
