Internet explorer gone wonky

Annie Woughman

The IE group is totally dead, so since this is on a Win7 machine, I am
hoping to get some help here. The Windows update that installed IE 10
seemed to go off without a hitch until I discovered that I could no longer
put things in "shopping carts" on some sites, I could no longer do the daily
crossword puzzle on the USA site without it quitting half way through and
when I try to log onto Facebook it tells me that I have entered the wrong
username and password too many times so it won't let me continue to try
logging on (I am the only one that uses this computer and this is when I
first click on the FB link). I finally uninstalled IE 10 and went back to
IE 9--however, all the same problems are still there. I have run virus,
spyware and malware scans and they have all come up clean. I finally
installed the Chrome browser and that works fine on all of the above things
that won't work in IE, but can anyone give me any ideas what might be wrong
with Internet Explorer?

Here are some basic suggestions.
Try a 'Process of elimination'.
Turn off Pop-up blocker.
In Manage Add-ons, disable everything.
In Tracking Protection, make sure everything is disabled.
Turn off SmartScreen Filter

Close IE and restart. See if things work again. If so, one by one
enable various items until something doesn't work.
Maybe you need Java or Flash Player for those sites.

If the above isn't successful, I don't know. Good Luck.

Simple: it's Internet Explorer.

Stick with Chrome, or get Firefox. :)

Mellowed has made some very good suggestions. I would like to add that from
my experience with IE10, it is the tracking protection which causes the most
problems. It is ON, by default, in IE10. In case you didn't know, it's the
little circle with the slash through it, toward the right end of the Address
Bar. Click on it, then select Turn Off Tracking Protection. If that
doesn't do the trick for a given site, try compatibility mode. It's the
torn-page icon, also toward the right end of the Address Bar.
Good Luck

While nntp groups may provide acceptable 'help and support' you might be better off in the long run in posting in the IE forum on
Microsoft Answers
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie

IE10 has an option to reset itself to default settings
- do that before doing anything else, shutdown/restart, then retest if your problems are still occur.
- you should also ensure that both Flash and Java are updated to the current version

You can always roll-back IE9 to IE10 by uninstalling it via 'View Installed Updates' to determine if IE10 is/was the problem and
reinstall it again via Windows Updates.

Why use Windows Update to install IE10 ?
- If you installed IE10 via Windows Update (Microsoft can tell based on telemetry collected from your pc) you are entitled (if not
resolved by MSFT support in the above forum) to no-charge support for IE problems.
- If you installed IE10 via a manual download and install you do not qualify for no-charge support.

Other options
- Operate IE10 in no-addon mode or disable all add-ons then enable one add-on at a time and retest.
- Operate IE10 in compatibility mode (not all web sites have updated their code for IE10 use)

I'm running IE10, but for some reason, I am not seeing this - when I
right click on the bar to see what bars are available, I do not see
one that says "Address Bar". What am I missing?

Where do you locate Tracking Protection?
Open IE. Click on the little gear near the upper right corner. Click on
'Manage Add-ons'. Select 'Tracking Protection'.
Then you can get suggested sites by getting suggestions 'on line'. I
choose 'Fan Boy' for lack of a better suggestion. Enable or Disable as
desired.

tools > manage add-ons > tracking protection

Then dabble-click on my personalized list

There /block/ what you want.

The Address Bar is where you type the internet address of the website you'd
like to visit. You know, like www.google.com, etc... You can
enable/disable tracking protection with the little slashed/circle icon, at
the right end of the Address Bar.
