Getting Printer driver

J

Jeff

I am adding a network printer on a Windows 7 64 bit laptop.

When I click on the "Windows Update" button in the "add Printer"
sequence I always the error message:

"Windows was unable to get a list of devices from Windows Update. Please
try again later"

No matter when I try I get the same error message. Is there another way
to get the list of devices printers from Windows Update?

Thanks

Wanted to add that I cannot temporarily connect the HP laserjet 1100
printer to the new laptop because it has an old parallel port conection
that the new laptop does not have.

So how do you plan to proceed? It seems like a driver is the least of
your troubles right now.

Why are you trying to "get the list of devices printers from Windows
Update"? What does that have to do with installing the printer?

There are multiple ways to accomplish your goal, but what I do is
connect the printer to the network and make sure it's shared, browse
to it with Windows Explorer, right click on it, and select Install.
The whole thing only takes a few seconds.

IOW, an ancient machine.

Win7 is telling you that there is no Win7 driver available for your
printer. It's too old. I looked for review, and one dated 2010 said "9
years and very happy with it", so the model is at least 11 years old.
You're out of luck.

If you still have our old computer, you can set it up as a printer
server, connected to the other computer(s) via a wireless router. The
other computer(s) would send the print job to the server, which would
then print it Thatraises a whole other bunch of iossue, though.

There is no official HP Windows 7 driver for the HP Laserjet 1100,
and they recommend the one packaged with the OS, but you might try
the one for Windows Vista from the HP site.

You don't describe your network setup, but the "official" way to set
up network printers allows having drivers, for various systems/OSs,
on the server. Then, when you connect to the network printer, you
can install the drivers over the network. This only works if the
printer driver has been written to allow it.

Here's some instructions from HP that might be helpful:

Elect to install as a local printer that is not connected to retrieve
the driver. There is an HP laserjet 1100 driver on Windows update you
can install. Then you should be good to go back and install it as a
remote since you already have the driver installed.

The driver might still be needed to properly format the file for
printing.

I'm unsure of that, so I'll now wait for the people who know to
criticize me severely :)

The printer is connected to a print server that is connected to my
router. All my other computers can access it through the home wlan.

Yes, it is very old but so reliable!

The 2 other Windows 7 laptops have this printer installed on them and
both can access the printer just fine through the home lan. But I do not
know how to find and copy the W 7 printer driver from the other W7
laptops to the new one. Can that be done?

That is what I read too but the W7 OS pre-installed on the new laptop
does no seem to have an HP driver I can use (that I can identify)

but you might try
the one for Windows Vista from the HP site.
I'll try to find that. Hope it exists.

I have a home wlan behind a router. The printer's parallel port is
attached to a printer server that is conected by cable to my router. The
2 other W 7 laptops on my wlan can both see it and print to it. This new
laptop cannot even install it.
Thank you.

Why are you trying to "get the list of devices printers from Windows
Update"? What does that have to do with installing the printer?
Because the HP instructions on the web said the driver is included in
the W7 OS under "Windows update"

The new laptop does not have a driver for it and the instructions say
that I should therefore click on "Windows Update" button on that add a
printer screen to get additional drivers.

it and print to it via the home wlan. But the new W7 laptop cannot see
it or install its driver.

What do you mean "browse to it with Windows explorer"?
I went to Devices and Printers and clicked on add a new printer.

I think so. I have heard of that, but I have no idea where or when.

I gotta go now, so I don't plan to Google. Maybe you can find it or
someone else knows...

I've tried that.

Here are my steps:
1. Went to Devices and Printers
2. Clicked on "Add a Printer"
3. Clicked on "Add a local printer"
4. For "choose a printer port" I chose the standard TCP/IP port (which
my router shows is the port assigned to the printer).
5. Next gives me a list of Printers. But among the HP printers there no
longer is the "HP Laserjet 1100" for me to select (as on my other W7
laptops.
6. My next options are either "Windows update" button or the "have a
disk" button.
7. Clicking on Windows update tells me
"Windows was unable to get a list of devices from Windows Update. Please
try again later"

If it's on the network, it has an IP address. Or rather, in your case,
the print server has an IP address. Browse to that address, the
printer should be visible, right click, 'Install', done. That's how I
_always_ do it. No problems so far. I understand you're playing with
an ancient printer, though, so YMMV.
I went to Devices and Printers and clicked on add a new printer.
I never do that.

That sounds like it should work. How do I find the print server's ip
address?
I have the print server's mac but not its ip address.
(I have the router's ip address but when I enter that I get the router).

Hi,

I had the same problem as yourself when trying to get an updated
collection of windows drivers for a HP printer running Win 7, 64 bit OS. Go
to the Windows Update Catalog and type in your printer. It will give you the
opportunity to locate the latest drivers for your OS. Read the descriptions
for each set of drivers to find AMD64 (64 bit) systems and download.
Good luck,
