Disappearing Desktop icons

I made some personal favicons from pictures and used them as
icons for some of my desktop links. They looked great, but after I rebooted, only the computer
icons remained and all my homemade icons reverted to the original computers icons.
is there a way to make the homemade icons permanent? is there a fix?

I keep almost nothing on my desktop so I have not changed any icons myself but I suggest you try setting the icons as explained in this How-to-geek article and see if they stay set. It's also possible you have a theme reloading the preset icons.
