Changing the Start Menu icon

I've searched for this but can't turn anything up: is it possible to change
the rather large, circular Windows-logo icon which activates the start menu?

Many thanks.

Augustus,

My word, that's a complex procedure for what I hoped would be a simple
tweak. And there's the chance of a good few complications, if the
follow-up messages there are to be believed. But many thanks.
If you just want to go back to the old style icon, you can right-click on
desktop, Personalize and then switch to Classic Windows Theme.

I'll do that, I think, thanks for the thought. I was perversely thinking to
keep the new theme but just change the odd detail I don't like, like that
Start button and the rotating circle icon that's replaced the old hourglass.

It's not as simple a tweak as changing the start menu box appearance in XP.
The circular button doesn't just have an "on/off" visual appearance. It's a
transition of color, brightness and transparency.
