windows 7 to a crawl

i upgraded xp to windows 7 and no matter what i do, the present program works at a crawl. it boots at a crawl, and the internet is a crawl. i have a 3gb cpu and 2 gb of RAM. i am thinking i should reload xp which was just fine.

first............is there any problem backing down to xp?

second ....................have you any suggestions as to what may be wrong?

Avoid upgrading, as the performance will suck compared to a clean install.

If it still crawls with a clean install, then... If 3gb cpu means a 3 GHz processor, then maybe the bottleneck is your graphics card or chipset.

Or maybe your machine is infested with malware.

Have you done a defrag on your HDD recently? If not and all your files are heavily fragmented it can slow things down a bit as well.

I agree with all of the three answers above. A clean install is always the best way to go. It's possible that a defrag may help, but I can't say for sure how much.

It would probably be best to go back and do a clean install.

I may be having a brain cramp right now, but I swore I read one couldn't upgrade XP to Windows 7?

That's right, there's no straight upgrade path from XP to Windows 7. A clean install is your only option.

Maybe he didn't mean "upgrading" upgrading...maybe he meant the way you "upgrade" from a Toyota to a Honda, or from a cranky, frigid wife to a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader.

Going back to Windows XP, if there is a legal activation key and complete a "clean install". This should pose no problem.


Before using the upgrade media was the unit checked and cleared of existing problems?
This includes possible the hardware not being Windows 7 acceptable.
Using maintenance procedures will help the process.
Then the upgrade media is capable of doing a "custom" install.

Have completed seven "custom" installs, had two problems concerning activation.
Installing the upgrade did not cause OS problems.

An aside:I am not very hardware and software capable, had good fortune.

The upgrade had no problem moving from XP to 7.
They must be the same type ie: pro to pro, home to home.
Microsoft allows Windows7 to be purchased at a upgrade price,
calling it a "custom" as oppose to "clean install" for Windows XP.

No there is no problem going back to XP, but why?

Did you install the correct drivers for your computer? Chipset, LAN or wireless, video card, etc.?
