Win 7 disaster with Network settings...

My new laptop of almost 2 weeks, had been working fine wirelessly
connected, then yesterday Microsoft downloaded 9-12 security and other
updates... and today I can NOT connect... even though this laptop with
WinXP sitting next to it... is working fine... with the same router and
modem. :(

It tells me my laptop is connected but I have no access. It shows in
the network configuration map an unidentified network between my laptop
and the internet. So I wondered if all these great security updates
allowed my connection to be hi-jacked? I tried every way I could, to
find where I could restore my laptop's connection, because all of their
fix-it resolutions just say unplug everything and start over.

This is an Intel adapter that I'm not familiar with [surprise... ;)],
and I don't want to run up and down my stairs plugging and un-plugging,
if anyone can tell me where in all of those locations is the setup I am
looking for... to get my connection back. The terrific Windows
firewall shows me public network is connected and my home network is
NOT... and I can't change the outgoing to block it. I knew I never
should have never depended on MS for firewall protection.

Is there any way out of this besides restoring to a previous day? If I
do that, I'm going to get all those MS updates again... <sigh>.
HELP.... :)

Probably a bit late in the day, but did you try the network
troubleshooter? You can access it via the control panel or by
right-clicking on the network icon in the task bar.

It's resolved similar problems for me in the past.

BTW does it work OK with an ethernet connection to the router?

Is there a button on the laptop to turn wi-fi on and off?

It sure is... you have my sympathy. :) I don't know if restore worked
correctly on mine either, because it didn't shut down properly.

I have updates turned off for now too. They only downloaded 87 updates
in the last 2 weeks, so I don't know where to begin figuring out what I
really need... if anything. The security updates are worrisome.

87 updates over two weeks, sounds like you shut down between updates.
Maybe corrupting the downloads. I have never used automatic updates, I
use
Check for updates and let me decide which to install and never had a
problem.

You should also check driver updates. Type> driver updates < in the
search box and make sure it is set NOT to install drivers from update.

Their drivers have been know to screw things up !!

LOL!!! Thank you SO MUCH! My brain just doesn't function well
under stress anymore... I totally forgot that! :) What a
relief....
Just to amplify my comment - if you just enter the IPCONIG command in
the run box, it works, but the CMD session closes down after the
command executes too fast for you to see the result. If you start a CMD
session first, it pauses at a command prompt so you can see the
results. I've always thought Microsoft should include a GUI IPCONFIG
interface, like they did up through Win98, since it's such a common and
useful troubleshooting tool.

Yes... I went through all of those trouble shooters for network
connections in Control Panel... and they all came down to unplug or
contact someone else. :)

I haven't tried an ethernet connection, since that's not how I need to
use it. It's connecting today for some reason, so maybe as I learn
more about Win7 and the Intel setup, I'll be able to resolve the
remaining problems. :) Thanks for your response.

I'm not completely senile... but my short term memory is SHOT, and I
rarely use that.

That's what I have always done too, until I forgot to check the settings
on this new laptop, because I was so consumed with the small fonts, and
several other annoyances I was trying to change.

Now I'm paying the price. ;) However, I didn't turn it off during
the update process... they were installed when I shut down... and it
shut down when completed.

The only thing I shut off was after it told me it had completed the
"restore" process... and then sat there with a black screen... for 5-6 mins.

Troubleshooting the connectivity issue, isolating the cause, and
repairing the actual problem.vv

Hmm... I used every troubleshooting option offered, and none of them
gave me any useful advice. So not being a network geek, and TOTALLY
unfamiliar with Win7, I could not find anything that I felt I could
safely change, since it was working fine until those downloads were
installed when it was shut down the night before. I would love to have
isolated the cause, and repaired the actual problem.

Sorry I'm not technically savvy enough to post here, as illustrated by
the fact that I forgot the CMD command requirement needed before the Run
command.

Has anyone tried this freeware program that claims to provide a GUI
for the Ipconfig command? According to the comment, it can even be
made portable.

Direct link here:
http://www.pkostov.com/wipcfg.html

To make it portable you only have to get these 5 files into a folder:

borlndmm.dll
cc3250mt.dll
winipcfg.exe
winipcfg.hlp
winipcfg.cnt

As the help file is the obsolete type you may need kb917607 to fix it.
