Why are some visual elements being automatically turned off?

Almost every day, I get a message that, because of memory, the theme
has been changed to Basic. I have an I7 desktop with 8G memory. 64
bit Windows 7 HP.

I have read the help and support the notification box links too. How
can I find out why this is happening? (Aero troubleshooter doesn't
find anything)

I am running several instances of Firefox and Agent 4.2 once and VLC
playing one AVI off my XP network drive using my TV as second monitor.
I also keep a Windows Explorer window open to the network drive.

I've gotten that message a couple of times but only when I was changing
some settings on my graphics card. If you haven't already, the next
time the message comes up, you need to find whether the system or
another source (such as the graphics card's program) generated the message.

Where would that be reported?

Task manager might show the source (as long as you leave it running
before checking); otherwise, check event viewer.

My money is on a VLC setting for the video output method, try changing
between openGL/directX/default etc.
