What do we call the start button?

Yes, this is a serious question. It doesn't say "Start" any more,
and it's not really a button. Does anyone know its official name?

Start Orb. But many still refer to it as the start button.

In a way, it's more a button than the old style. After all, it's round,
just like the buttons on my shirt.

Sorry, I just *had* to say that.

I use all three names mentioned in this thread so far: start orb, start
button, orb. I think my choice is random, but maybe I'm fooling myself.

Is "Start Orb" official? I've never seen any "official" reference to
it, and always thought of it as a slangy thing to call it.

If you have an "official" citation for that name, I'd very much like
to see it.

I guess it's not official. Google says everyone except MS calls it an orb.

Hover the cursor over it, and it will say "Start". Windows Help calls it
the "Start button", look up "Locate the Start menu" in Help and Support"

Just refer to it as the "Start Button". Everyone will know what we're
talking about!

I call it a 'cursor magnet'.

When I'm helping people by phone, I say, "click on the big round icon with
the Microsoft logo at the bottom left of your screen".

Microsoft still refers to it as the Start Button. Go to microsoft.com in
the support section, and the tutorials still call it that, so I guess that's
official.

Maybe not "official" but all the internal Microsoft folks I deal with say
it's the "Windows orb".

Thanks, Bob. I guess that is the official answer.

Thanks to everyone else who responded, too. "Orb" seems like the
most popular choice.
