What do we call the start button?

Yes, this is a serious question. It doesn't say "Start" any more,
and it's not really a button. Does anyone know its official name?
Just the "Windows button"? It's got a picture of the Windows logo, and
it's round button.

The one that really burns me and continues to cause confusion
isn't from Microsoft: Java vs Javascript.
Blame Netscape for that one. Javascript was originally Livescript,
IIRC. Netscape wanted to jump on the Java bandwagon.

I still call it the Start button, even though it isn't spelled out. I
also call the Taskbar the Taskbar and the System Tray the System Tray,
even though they aren't labeled, and never have been.
As to the taskbar, if you r-click it you will see the option to "Lock
the taskbar". Now as to the Notification area (what you call System
Tray), please right-click and select Customize, then read the path that
appears in the Address bar.

I lost faith in MS's ability to give things suitable names when they
assigned "boot" and "system" to partitions as they did (backwards).
The bass-ackwards terminology that causes me no end of trouble explaining
things to 8000 graduate engineers (plus many more nontechnical types!) at my
POE is the choice of names for the DEP settings.

Quick quiz: DEP is a security feature that blocks an attack mechanism that
is otherwise almost trivial for anyone who either knows anything about
stacks, or who has bought any of the malware tools widely available via the
Internet. Which of the following two words describes the MORE secure DEP
setting?

OptIn
OptOut

In this context you probably guessed right: it's OptOut.

If you select "OptIn" then you have the ability to name any programs you
want to run with DEP enabled; others run unprotected...in other words, you
can opt in for specific programs but are otherwise unprotected. Conversely,
under OptOut your programs run with protection unless they're explicitly
exempted...in other words, you can opt out of protection.

Schtoopid choice of names.
