In those 4 updates there may be one that is causing the problem of the
others failing to install.
Install each one individually.
In todays 15 updates for my system there is one rogue file (KB2647753)
stopping all the others installing. I installed that on it's own and
then the others installed ok.

Yes.

Reinstalling the Operating System is the answer to *all* Windows problems.

Yes.

Reinstalling the Operating System is the answer to *all* Windows problems.
Afraid not! It's usually the least preferred method to eliminate problems.

You will find that each update is linked to a KB number. If you go to
the MS Knowledge Base, and search for that number, there is normally a
downloadable hotfix for that problem, which comes as a self-extracting
install program.

These will often install when MS Update fails.

Otherwise, depending on what the updates are, it may be safe to tell MS
Update to just ignore them in future.

Oh, my. I'm sorry your sense of humour has been lost!!

However, most calls I get from friends start with something like, "I had
this computer problem so I reinstalled Windows, and now everything is
screwed up. Where's my pictures and emails?"

You did, of course, disable real time scanning by your anti virus
program and real time anti malware programs before running Windows
Updates or do you foolishly have them set to update automatically? Try
disabling your AV before updating again.
I never do (MS Essentials), not saying you're wrong but I just never have
and never had a problem. I would think if this were necessary the update
dialog would issue a warning.
Of course, if I had a problem I would turn of the AV as part of trouble
shoot.

That same one, KB2647753, keeps telling me that it is available for
update after two successful updates (at the time, I hadn't realized the
first one had succeeded).

Well, it doesn't bug me any more - I hid it. At least it didn't seem to
interfere with any other updates.

There are threads out there already, about that one. At least Microsoft
is aware they screwed up.

That's not the one I read :)

The person at http://tinyurl.com/8t6z5mh (it's at Microsoft) suggested
unhiding and uninstalling the fix & then reinstalling it from a new
download at MS.

So, just for fun, I obtained the downloadable copy in order to do what
he suggested. However, much to my surprise, KB2647753 was no longer in
my hidden updates file, so I abandoned the experiment.

Another day, another bit of wasted time :)

Far from it! It's that you happened to hit on an overused answer by the
warranty support reps from too many OEM's.
