I have an HP laptop. I was fooling around looking deeper inside the OS, thinking I was in shadow mode (shadow defender) but I noticed I wasn't. I downloaded a simplix reinstall. Now my computer says the OS is not genuine and I have no D drive to use for reinstall (it's an HP).

I tried a Windows upgrade but when I entered my license code it said it was from a third party and wouldn't work. I tried a different Simplix and it had to run a system repaid. Here is the message that I got. Is there a way to reinstall Windows using my HP licence code?

Restart the computer and run the check again, the code is 1.

On the system HDD, reallocated sectors (28 pcs) was detected.
It is recommended to perform a full scan surface of the system HDD.

Hi. Thanks so much for replying. I don't have a backup and I can't find my reinstallation CDs. I guess my only choice is to either buy a new installation from HP or try to install a different OS on this computer. Maybe Linux. Will I have to do anything to the hard drive of this computer to prepare it? Or can I just reinstall a new OS over top of what's on here? I am geting a new computer soon so I will learn how to do a snapshot and I will make sure to keep a re-installation CD. I really appreciate your respnse. Chuck

" ... and I have no D drive to use for reinstall " certainly puts a damper on the party
but don't panic. you have some options. you can boot into win 7, so that's great

booting into win 7 allows you to pull all of your data off the pc. this is your first priority
don't forget to 'sync' your web browser so it uploads your bookmarks and history

there's a program called "belarc advisor" that is free for personal use, and will pull your windows keys
print a hardcopy of the report, email a copy to yourself, and store a copy on an external drive

you can download win 7 iso and burn it to a flash drive using rufus (rufus.ie)

download all of your hp drivers from hp.com
i'm pretty sure you can put them on the win 7 install flash drive
or, at the very least, your NETWORK driver so you can go back online to get the rest of them, and USB drivers, so you can use your mouse and keyboard. they may be presented in .exe format. i am pretty sure you won't be able to run .exe programs from install setup. extract them if they are .exe, and copy them to your thumbdrive
and maybe your video driver

using the key from belarc, you can download an iso from m.s.

test your flash drive to see if it boots into win 7 install
make sure to have all of your software keys

at this point you can experiment with your system. download a program called 'macrium reflect'. you'll need another usb for this. burn the iso to usb using rufus. macrium has a 'repair' option. it's possible that you may be able to get your 'd' drive back. at this point, you have nothing to lose. allow macrium to go ahead and try to fix your boot record

otherwise, you're ready to put a new win 7 install on your pc

note: the iso from windows will be the most regressive, archaic, difficult win 7 iso on the net. that's how they play. they're not going to make it easy for you, as a matter of fact, m.s. will make it as difficult as possible, then tell you to install win 10
also, make sure to have everything you need to access hooked up before you turn on your pc. there isn't any 'plug n play' with any of this

also, with macrium, you can image your operating system. store your data to another drive (not c: ) this will decrease the size of your image. now you can restore without overwriting your data. now you have a backup of your operating system
