Problem with IE8 and Windows7 Please help

Hi a friend of mine is using Windows 7 home Premium 64bit and the
included IE8. He is now getting problems with IE8 such as not
displaying pages correctly and trying to download files. I suggested
that we re-install IE8, now starts the problem.
1. Went on to the Windows 7 site and could not find a version of IE 8
for windows 7 so downloaded the 64 and 32bit versions of Vista and XP
IE. When we tried to install said versions it kept saying not the
correct version for this version of windows. Can somebody tell me if
there is a special version of IE 8 for windows 7 and where to download
it or another way to re-install it from the windows 7 CD, or in fact
any other solution. Also we have a problem with windows media player
this will not work. Any help with this would also be most welcome. We
have carried out an extensive virus , spyware, malware and Trojan scan
which has not found anything.
Thanks
Tony

Since IE8 is the built in version with Win7 there isn't a separate download.

Sounds correct.

If no suitable system restore points, then try a repair install of Windows 7

If you friend looks at his windows 7 system he will find the 32 bit version
of IE 8 included in it. I suggest he tries that as there are problems with
the
64 bit version and some web pages.

Hi, Tony.

Every version of Win7 comes with IE8 built in.

Every 64-bit version of Win7 comes with TWO versions of IE8: 32-bit and
64-bit.

In Win7 x64, your friend should find the two IE8's here and here:
32-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
64-bit: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

If your friend is new to 64-bit Windows, it may seem surprising that all
32-bit apps are installed into the new "(x86)" version of the Program Files
folder, but this is so that Windows can match up the proper .exe, .dll,
drivers, etc.

Even in 64-bit Windows, the 32-bit version of IE8 runs, by default. To
confirm which version is currently running, click Help | About Internet
Explorer. If the 64-bit version is running, it will say so on the "Version"
line; the 32-bit version does not mention "bitness" at all. To run the
64-bit version, just browse to it In the Program Files folder tree and click
on the .exe file, like any another application. And, like any other, you
can easily create a shortcut or pin it to the Start menu or Taskbar.

A few programs - notably Adobe's Flash Player - will not work in any 64-bit
browser, but will happily run in the 32-bit IE8 in 64-bit Windows.

There's a "Compatibility View" button on the IE8 toolbar - right at the end
of the Address field - try using it. What it does, is set IE8's rendering
engine back to IE7's. You may find the webpages suddenly work correctly.
Also, make sure to run the 32-bit version of IE8 if you want your plug-ins
to work e.g. Flash. Most major plug-ins are still 32-bit and don't "plug in"
to IE8 64-bit.

Also, you might try clearing / deleting IE8's temporary file cache. Get rid
of the old HTML files & cookies and load the pages again:

Tools > Internet Options > Delete

That's about all there is to it -- IE8 works very well, so there's no need
to reinstall IE8.

I will add something to anyone who thinks that Internet Explorer , or some
particular web page, 'don't work'.

1. You must ensure that you have the desired add-ons, correctly
installed.

2. Have a very good look through the various IE8 settings, especially if
you
did not install it yourself. A very good thing to do is to download another
browser and if IE8 works oddly, try looking at the page with the other
browser.
If it works OK, then what is wrong is probably the settings,
