Printer problems again

S

Scott

Some time ago I sought advice from the group about printer problems,
which at the time I attributed to Microsoft updates. However, the
printer recovered and worked faultlessly for several weeks. (Meantime
I reinstalled the updates as well an another batch of updates.)

The problem has occurred again. This time it is clear that it is
Adobe related. As soon as I tried to print a document using Adobe
Reader a printer fault occurred. When I checked 'Devices and
Printers' I found the printer had been moved to 'Unspecified'. I
restarted the computer and the printer had returned to 'Devices and
Printers' but moved again as soon as I opened Adobe Reader.

The version is 11.0.0. I am using Windows 7, 64 bit.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, more so by others as I
am trying to print Amazon gift vouchers!!!

Probably a buggy printer driver for this unknown make or model printer.
Or it could be a duff interface for the unknown interface you have.

It's probably only Adobe related because that's what you are using right
now, if you were using a lot of spreadsheets you'd no doubt be telling
us it's Excel related.

All pure guess work as you've told us nothing about the device you are
having a problem with.

If Adobe has done with the system settings what you think it has, then
it's moved into outlaw territory!
Highly illegal, highly reprehensible, highly unlikely!
I'd look for other causes before that. Try some suggestions from Adobe

Not unknown. HP Laserjet 1022. Probably one of the best known
printer manufacturers in the world. Driver updated by Windows.

Yes that seems to be a possible explanation as 'print as image' works.

Did you miss the bit where I said that the printer has worked
faultlessly for several weeks and the problem only occurred when I
tried to print an Amazon voucher?

I have now!

It certainly seems to have stopped the printer spooler and added one
document to the queue that won't print.

First of all, thank you for your fast and helpful response.

As it happens, I did some looking after my original posting. I don't
think an out of date driver is the issue, as it should be updated
automatically, but I have dowloaded and installed the latest printer
driver (HP LaserJet 1022) anyway.

What has solved the issue is 'print as image' so I do wonder if Amazon
has introduced an unusual or unsupported character into the voucher.

Can you print other documents from other programs after you re-allocate
the printer, and if you clear the print queue does the problem go away
for other documents? It may be a DRM problem with the Amazon gift
voucher files. It may need to see a particular version of the Adobe
viewer, so maybe you can't contact the Amazon authentication server to
permit printing, and that is what's causing the strange behaviour.

No, it seems to need a restart of the computer since (as far as I can
see) the issue is that the printer spooler is stopped which renders
the printer unusable.

Except that it will print as 'print as image' and the pdf file can be
saved so I do don't think authentication is the issue. I think there
is an incompatibility between the file, the Reader and the printer
driver but I am not knowledgeable enough to understand this, which is
why I posted to this group.

Shot in the dark, if adobe reader is involved maybe you could
uninstall it and install a new reader such as Sumatra or some other one.

I have kicked the bloated adobe reader out about a year ago and am now
using Sumatra which is slim and fast.

Thanks. We use Foxit at work, so I might try that.

My apologies, my crystal ball was in the repair shop. Now I have it and
have read your initial message again I can see that you have an HP
Laserjet 1022
Yes that seems to be a possible explanation as 'print as image' works.
Works for some types of printout but not others? Unlikely it's a cable
or interface then
