Hello,
I am using winXp, since early 2000. My new computer with win 7 will arrive next monday. My first question about win 7, can you move default locations of my document, my pictures, destop folder to another partions? like on winXp when you use tweakUi. I intend to do that so I won't loose any data when I reinstall window. Hope you guys can tell me if I can and what utility I can use to do that job.
Thank you for your time.

The answer is yes you can move those folders to a new location.

I don't keep up with the apps that can do this as I don't rely on Windows default locations for my storage need. I built a new folder structure of my own for storage and don't use My Documents. I do know you don't need an app to do this, the apps only make it easier to accomplish.

I did move the default Windows Live Mail storage to my data drive.

First, I would recommend that if you are going to put data folders on another partition that you create a high-level folder named as your userid on the root and then move My documents, My Music, etc under that folder. The reason for that is the increased security in W7 and the fact you may at some point want to lock out guests or other user accounts from your data. Subfolders inherit parent folders permissions by default so you can easily control access to all your data by changing W7 permissions on that single high-level folder.

Then, the easiest way to move the folder and along with it the library pointers is to open windows Explorer to C:\users\youruserid\My Documents and drag the folder over to the other drive and, while holding down the SHIFT key, drop it in your new youruserid-named high-level folder. Holding the Shift is critical so that it MOVES the folder, otherwise it copies the file and folders and no pointers are changed. Repeat for My Pictures, My Music, My Videos, & Downloads and if you want, Contacts and Favorites

Thank you for the answer, It looks to me very detail, but since I did not have win 7 computer with me yet, I have to wait until Monday. May be I need to ask you how to create a "high level folder". I am using XP, so I am not familiar of that.
Once again, thank you for your explain in very detail

I simply mean a folder hanging directly off the root of the drive. Example D:\pc8200\ so that all your data folders will be subfolders under it (example D:\pc8200\My Documents\, D:\pc8200\My Music\, etc.) That way you can easily control access to all your data folders via permission settings set simply on folder D:\pc8200\

Look at this forum. You see the sub forums inside the main one? It's the same with folders. Each folder inherits the parent permissions from the main folder. :)

Each folder inherits the parent permissions from the main folder. :)
Each subfolder permissions can be can be modified independently from the parent. If I'm not mistaken you have the option to include or exclude subfolders when making changes to a parent folder.

Transfering folders.

Hi PC8200, I've actually just done this; I have a 120gb SSD for programs so wanted to transfer "My" folders to data HDD.
Click "Start" > "Computer" and then double left click "C" drive to open it. This should bring up the "My" (and Public folders if you want to transfer those too).
As an example: right click "My Documents", click Properties > Location > Move and enter the location where you want the folder to move to. Repeat for all others that you want to move.
If you want to transfer any files or folders from your old computer to the new (like Contacts, Favourites, Documents, Pictures, etc,) you can use Windows Easy Transfer. You need the same version of this program on both computers so copy it from W7 on to a flash drive and then install it on your XP machine. When you run the program you can use various methods of transfer (flash drive, USB cable, over a network) but you're are given very precise instructions and it's very easy.
Good luck with the transfer :)

i like to add dont get frustrated with win7, even though your use to using XP, win7 has more features. easier to find your files and folders unless you accidently do my mistake and hide them. i have home premium and my OEM SBP OS came with anytime upgrade. im trying to save up to buy another laptop, to trash this one and do clean install with the OEM SBP DVD and buy win7 pro upgrade.

Just FYI, it is not legal to transfer your OEM to a new computer (except, I've heard, if you live in Germany). Once an OEM is installed it is locked to that computer for the life of the machine. When the machine dies, so does the license; even replacing your motherboard in the computer legally voids the license. That is not the case with Full or Upgrade versions (though upgrades have their own rules for legality).

That would be "End Task" from the "Applications" tab in "Task Manager". Right click on Windows taskbar to see an option to "Start Task Manager".

If I need Task Manager I just hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and choose Start Task Manager (last option in the list) that way.

Usually I prefer to use Process Explorer if I'm not frozen. It has a restart option which I use quite often. You can find a link in our Freeware DB.

Before Windows 7 I used Ctrl-Alt-Del to access Task Manager. Windows 7 exiting to the login screen was simply too annoying for me. Took some time to change my Ctrl-Alt-Del habit, but I finally switched to using right click on taskbar to load the task manager. The funny thing about this is I never payed any attention to the option for loading task manager from the right click context menu and its been there all along in Vista and XP.

I never noticed it before either. I don't normally right-click in the empty space of the task bar for anything.
