Very true. I always try to clone me drive before attempting anything
these days. Many times I have to shuffler around all the clones of my
systems and get rid of redundant drives. I have burned myself on
several occasions if I remember correctly but not in some time.
I've mentioned this somewhere on Usenet recently, but maybe not this
NG.

I keep a spreadsheet with a list of all the external drives in the
house and what is backed up on them[1]. It helps, but not completely,
because even with the spreadsheet it's confusing. It's also become
clear to me that my bookeeping is not all that accurate or timely :)

[1] Some of the drives are for old computers no longer in use, but I'm
a packrat ^h^h^h^h^h^h^h^h historian.

OTOH, if you choose open, it runs, no?

At least that's what happens here.
Well, yes, but the expected method of execution for the many .msc
files is to simply click Start, Run, enter all or part of the
filename, and hit Enter. Trying to open one of those files sort of
implies navigating to it first, and that's an additional effort.

Here are most of them. I've added a description to the ones I use
frequently.

certmgr.msc
ciadv.msc
compmgmt.msc - Computer Management
devmgmt.msc - Device Manager
dfrg.msc
diskmgmt.msc - Disk Management
eventvwr.msc - Event Viewer
fsmgmt.msc
gpedit.msc - Group Policy Editor
lusrmgr.msc
ntmsmgr.msc
ntmsoprq.msc
perfmon.msc - Performance Monitor
rsop.msc
secpol.msc
services.msc - Services Manager
wmimgmt.msc

Likewise, the various Control Panel applets can be launched directly
by using the same method to run the respective *.cpl file. The big
difference is that *.cpl filenames aren't descriptive in the
slightest, so you almost need a decoder ring.

Not knowing what happened is a downfall, but, my main concern
was that this wasn't spyware/malware/virii related.

I verified that wasn't the case prior to the repair install,
so I did invest maybe an hour of time total prior to the
repair install.

And yes, I still don't know what the root of the problem was,
but I know it isn't/wasn't an exploit of some type, which was
my main concern.

Now, he's just got to keep an eye on the system for other
signs of issues that may point to a larger problem, like a
failing HD.
I understand.
Overall I have had very few problems in the many years I have been
using PCs starting with 3.1. Before that I had an Atari 1040ST and ran
a local BBS using Nitelite SW designed my Paul Swanson.

I think the whole program was written in Atari BASIC.

If I remember it was back in the early '80s.

I remember paying somewhere around $500 for a single sided single
density converted to DSDD 5 1/4 disk drive x 2 and an ATR 8000.

Ya, I am the same. A pack rat/hoarder of some sort( Packhorder). I
still have an Atari 128. A PC I fired up a week or so back that still
has a working Windows 95 OS and I still haven't hit the bottom of the
pile. I have a box of 10Gig drives under a bench not to mention my
basement and garage. Please don't mention my room upstairs in my
garage.

Try *** eventvwr.msc*** instead of the mmc.exe extension and then what happens ???

JS
Ok, I entered eventvwr.msc at the run prompt and get the exact thing
that shows up in the event viewer when I run MMC.exe
