    Somehow a friend managed to remove the Favorites, Homegroup and MY Computer
    folders from Windows Explorer. Can any one tell me how to get that view
    back?

    Did you try going to "folder options" and click on "restore defaults"?

    If you don't see the navigation pane on the left side of an open window,
    click Organize, point to Layout, and then click Navigation pane to display
    it.
    (This was copied/pasted from Windows Help and Support)

    I don't know about "My Computer," but the other items are controlled by
    registry entries:

    Libraries
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5}\ShellFolder
    "Attributes"=dword:b080010d ;enable
    "Attributes"=dword:b090010d ;disable

    Favorites
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{323CA680-C24D-4099-B94D-446DD2D7249E}\ShellFolder
    "Attributes"=dword:a0900100 ;enable
    "Attributes"=dword:a9400100 ;disable

    Homegroup
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B4FB3F98-C1EA-428d-A78A-D1F5659CBA93}\ShellFolder
    "Attributes"=dword:b084010c ;enable
    "Attributes"=dword:b094010c ;disable

    Network
    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C}\ShellFolder
    "Attributes"=dword:b0040064 ;enable
