Buying Windows 7 64 bit

I am planning to buy a new motherboard, CPU, memory and Windows 7,
64 bit. Do I have to buy the Windows 7 from the same vendor and the
motherboard at the same time?

If I can buy Windows 7 64 bit without buying a motherboard at the
same time, where can I get it at the best price? Thank you in

You'll need to do some shopping around, depends on who's having a sale
at the time. Costco generally offers a pretty good price.

Individual copies of Win 7-64 are occasionally on sale at Staples,
Costco, etc, but in my experience the best bet is to buy a bundle.
Bundle prices are often a much better buy than sourcing from different
vendors. Once in a while, it's spectacular: I got an OEM Win7 Pro-64
with a 1TB internal drive for $120, which was in fact the price of the
drive. OEM versions are for anyone who builds systems, BTW: there's no
ethical and AFAIK no legal issue if you roll your own.

Pre-installation Kit. AFAIK you can't install OEM Windows 7 without it.

Yes, that's what it says on the sleeve. According to the licence, it
looks like I'm an "assembler." I had no trouble installing and
activating the OS on this machine. I guess my left hand sold the system
to my right hand. Neither ever knows what the other is doing... ;-)

I bought an OEM version of Win 7 32 bit to install on one of my old
computers. Was able to do so without any pre-installation kit - it just
installed and activated fine.

The difference is that Professional has some features that Home
Premium doesn't have. You can read about them here:

that *both* Home Premium and Professional come with Windows Media

I have Pro on this computer, my wife has Home Premium on her laptop, for
what we do there's no difference. I'd go by price. With both, you may
have to download additional MS freeware, such as Movie Maker (a nice
little program for basic movie editing.)

Note that there is a difference between "Movie Maker" and "Windows Live
Movie Maker"! Each has some features that the other does not. You might
want to have both within easy reach.

X:\Program Files\Movie Maker\moviemk.exe

My Drive C: has Win7 x64 Ultimate; the X: indicates the drive on which I
still have WinXP SP3 installed. WMM is WinXP vintage but it runs fine in
Win7 when I click on the .moviemk.exe file. WLMM is also a free download,
part of the Windows Live Essentials suite.

For many people, there is no difference. But for others there is. It
depends entirely on you and whether Professional's additional features
are important to you.

For you and your wife, going by price may have been the correct thing
to you, but that doesn't mean that it is for Daniel Prince.
