I've got a mix of antivirus software running on my machines, split evenly between Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 for my main ones and then Avira Free AV for the ones I don't use very often.

As much as I like KIS 2009, I've this series of AV software for quite some time and would be interested to hear your recommendations? Ideally something with a built in firewall and POP3 scanning :)

Personally I like AVG, the free version is great but the commercial one is even better!

I must admit, I used to use AVG all the time - but it seemed to slow my laptop down much more than Avira (it is only a little 1Ghz machine though ;))

It's been a while since I've tried AVG so I might have to give it a go and see what the new version is like - it certainly looks better from the screenshots I've seen.

I've got Norton AV running at the moment as it was free with my online bank, it's not as bad as everyone says but I don't think I'll get it again when my subscription runs out!

I use AVG too (the free version), and I've never had a problem. Then again, as it has never detected a virus how do I know if it works

lol, I know exactly what you mean! Same with them all, if they don't detect anything, does that mean nothing is there? Who knows! lol

Ignorance is bliss

Norton has picked up lots of Viruses in e-mails for me, but never an infection on my PC - fingers crossed ;)

I use FProt, and have done for many years now. It seems to be one of the first companies to react to new virus threats and doesn't use up too many system resources. It's not free, but I don't mind paying for something as essential as a Virus scanner.

The built in rootkit detector is also useful (it's called Blacklight, and this part can be downloaded for free if you want).

I have been using NOD32 on my machines for a long time now and the only problem I have had with it is that it seems to slow down the upload speed when you go to a Java speed test site. There seems to be a lag when it is sending. Am using ver 2.70 It seems to work fine and have had no problems with viruses and it is a small footprint also.

What's wrong with Win 7's firewall?

I've got a mix of antivirus software running on my machines, split evenly between Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 for my main ones and then Avira Free AV for the ones I don't use very often.

I am not challenging here, but wonder if most need another firewall. I was using Windows Live OneCare, but it doesn't work with 7, and MS is discontinuing it. WLOC had spy protection, which is built in with Defender, Back-up (I switched to the native version in Win7), and Firewall. So all I really needed was a good antivirus. I am using Avast! for now, but am willing to be convinced that something else is better. I want it to use few resources and stop viruses. Thanks.

Well, I would definitely go for AVG, whether you download the free version (which is amazing) or buy (or warez/keygen ) the premium one (which is amazing x10). It's user friendly, easy to set up, and has loads of features, even with the free one.

If you have ever come across AV software that you like, and that has worked for you, then I would suggest to continue using them. I personally am a fan of free software, so I tend to use AVG, Avast, Antivir and the like. On the payside I have used, and liked, Kaspersky. I also have come to hate Norton Internet Security (or as I like to call it Norton Anti Networking as it makes it nearly impossible to network computers together) and McAffey. They are both far to bloaty, their scans take far too long for the amount that they find (I have actually run tests where side by side norton/mcaffey found and successfully treated less than Kaspersky or any of my free AV progs). So basically if you want good AV keep away from the two "big names" because that's all they really are.

I used a lot of different AV softwares like Kaspersky, NOD32, Norton, AVG, Avira etc. and found Avira Paid version to be most stable, lowest on system resources, fast and efficient for my system. Opinions differ from people to people but for me Avira is the best with NOD32 closely following it.

There is no "Best Anti-Virus Software"!
It doesn't really matter what you use as long as you use it and keep it up-to-date!

Everybody will say that their's is the best but, for a number of different reasons. Some will pro-free software; some will be anti-Microsoft; some will be pro big name. However, they all do their job!

They will all react to new threats and what really depends is how quick they react, and how quick you, the user, gets the update.

This "my dad is bigger than your dad" response is no help. No one here will have done exhausting clinical trials. Read up on what the computer press says about them all.
When you have chosen one then KEEP IT UP-TO-DATE!

Comodo now that it seems compatible with W7 :)

For the firewall I use my routers built-in hardware one.
