Windows Live Mail Essentials 2011

R

Roland Mösl

I have Windows Live Mail basic version installed and that suits me fine.
Now I am prompted to update with Windows Live Mail Essentials 2011.
Would that simply update what I already have or would it create add-ons
which I do not want? As I said, I am happy with what I have at the moment.
I used Outlock Express on Windows XP.

I was not able to transfer my emails to Windows 7 windows Live

So I had to change to Thunderbird.
Now I find Thunderbird far better than Outlock Express

You can export your OE folders to WLM. All you have to do is export
them (as a single file) to the XP desktop, transfer to a memory stick,
copy to the Win7 desktop, and import from there.

It's a shame you can't copy them to TB, though. I'd like to keep all my
OE stuff with TB, but have to keep a copy of WLM just to look at the old
OE folders when I need to.

You can migrate your email, address book, and settings from OE to TB.

Maybe. But my OE6 is on an old XP machine. TB is on a new Win7HPx64
setup.

I downloaded and installed ImportExportTools-2.3.5.xpi into TB and tried
importing from WLM on the Win7 machine (to which I had already imported
the OE6 dbx files). First problem was that if I left it at the default
(to import everything), TB just hung there on clicking "Next". Second
problem was that if I chose to just import mail, and clicked on "Next"
there was no WML on the TB import menu, just Outlook, OE, Eudora, and
Communicator 4.x . So I chose OE6, and navigated to the WLM folders
with the *.eml files. After importing, the Import message box appeared:
"Mail was successfully imported from Outlook Express" and "No mailboxes
were found to import". An "Outlook Express Import" folder appeared in
"Local Folders", but it was empty.

I'm obviously doing something wrong, but can't see what!

If all else fails, create a folder on the Desktop. Open WLMail and open a
folder. Highlight all the messages, right click and drag them to this
folder. Copy Here.

Open T-Bird and create a new folder. Open the Desktop folder and highlight
all the messages. Right click and drag them to to the new T-Bird folder.
Copy Here.

Rinse, lather and repeat for the remaining folders. Everything in T-Bird
now? Kiss that ugly POS WLMail goodbye.

It doesn't sound like you're following the directions from the link I
provided in the slightest. Since you tried it a different way and
weren't happy with the results, maybe you'll give the recommended
method a shot.

This sub-thread has drifted a bit. He's trying to export from OE to
TB, not from WLM to TB.

Thanks, Bruce. Takes a time but works well.

This is under the "Windows 7" heading from your link:
If you are running Windows 7 you may not be able to install Outlook
Express. If you wanted to install Outlook Express to work around
problems migrating messages from Outlook you could install either the
Windows Live email client (easiest) or the Windows Mail email client and
use the ImportExportTools extension to import the .EML files. Both store
messages using .EML files and support dragging and dropping messages to
Windows Explorer as .EML files.

Perhaps you'd like to make clear exactly what I was doing was wrong. As
far as I was concerned I /was/ trying to import from the *.eml files in
the WLM storage folders.

It wasn't until Bruce noted in his reply that I could just drag and drop
from WLM to TB (via the desktop) that it became obvious that I had to
create a desktop folder of *.eml files first. And then I didn't have
to go through the import/export rigmarole.

You've indicated success, so I guess it's academic now. The good news
is that you've proven that you can do something that you initially
said couldn't be done. Good job.

Course, you'll never get any updates for WM but you don't seem to care
much about security being as you use a "snookered" program on Windows.
What choice did I have since I despised WLM? Why use a program that truly
sucks just to get security updates? So far Avast has kept all our PCs free
of crap. Why doesn't MS give us a choice? MS can't afford to put WM as a
choice in W-7 and update it? MS can't let us decide if we want to download
WLM with all it's useless goodies?

Keep away from WLM2011 - in my opinion it's a disaster.
This version is the worst Beta ever Microsoft released.
There is also problem with Uninstall procedure.
Stay with WM .

AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!! On top of that all the useless MS suffocating security
features don't allow you to remove programs you add yourself. I think W-7
itself is a disaster. I see no improvement over Vista. I wish I had read
some Forums and come here before I threw my money away on this PC w/W-7. Of
all the MS OSs we've used since 1996 this is the worst to get set up and
running. W-7 can't even detect an external modem. What crap. >:-(

I read with increasing interest all of the pissing and moaning about
WLM2011. I have been using it since it first became available a couple of
months ago. I am not a "power" user -- I send maybe 10-15 emails a day
and receive about the same number. I don't get very excited about the lack
of carats(?) >> that many seem to be complaining about. The only problem I
have encountered is the infamous ? that precedes all the messages I send.
This is a result of using IE9 beta, as it is somehow linked to WLM2010
through some quirk of MS code. And BTW, I really like IE9 -- it is
lightning fast and I have found no major problems with it either. I do
detect a bit of ABM (anyone but MS) bias from some of the posters here but
that's nothing new.

That being said, I do miss my Outlook Express that I have used for almost
10 years.
Can't you move it to Programs (x86)? Use a thumb drive. It takes less than
5 minutes. WM works when moved to W-7 so OE should also work.

IMO that makes WLM 2011 at best highly annoying and possibly almost useless
for e-mail and Usenet, as now I have to manually add those quotation
chevrons to the message I'm replying to or risk hopeless confusion on the
part of anyone reading my e-mail/post.

I assume MS is going to fix this, perhaps a letter-writing campaign would
encourage them. Anyone know where to send helpful comments to someone in
authority at MS?
