Win7 doesn't see my CD/DVD burner now

B

Bob H

Up untill today I have had no problems with win7 seeing my CD/DVD
burner, but now it is not seen either in device manager nor in windows
explorer.

It is however recognised in the BIOS at boot up and I have made sure
that the connections are tight.

I have also tried computer management , but throws up an error about it
not been connected and it is not sen there either.

How do I get my CD/DVD burner back in windows.

Thanks

Start by checking to see if the drive will load an installation disk for
Win7 or any other OS.
If that works then you know the drive is probably functioning correctly and
its an OS thing.

If it works then try using a different cable and different input into the
computer. You'll have to note whether it's an ATA or SATA connection and
change things according to what's available.

Write back if none of this works, or did work.

Bob,

Check this out at Microsoft Support:

Ok, when I insert a DVD into the Writer, on bootup it is read by the
system and asks if I want to boot from it.

I have changed the cable after a system rebuild into another case, and
it is still not sen in windows explorer.

In Administrator Tools\Computer management, a box comes up saying I
must initialise the disc before Logical Disk Manager can access it.
And then 'Use the following partition style for the selected disc,
which is MBR or GPT.

Any ideas please as to how I get it back in windows.

Thanks

It means that somehow your computer now thinks that your CD drive is now
a hard drive.

Thanks but that doesn't answer my question.

Thanks but that doesn't answer my question.
It looks as as if it needs a drive letter assigning to it.
Computer/right click/Manage/Storage-disk management.

Let us know any sign of it that you see in there.

I've just tried yet another cable, and still no difference.

The dvd drive is not seen in disk management at all, as well as not seen
in windows explorer.

One thing I have noticed is that very recently, I now have a SCSI disc
in Device Manager, which I tried uninstalling, but after a reboot it
came back again. For now I have disabled it.

Thanks

My Device Manager has a SCSI CD ROM as well, but it is the driver for
SlySoft Virtual CloneDrive, which lets me mount ISO files as a CD or
DVD. Have you installed such a program?

Can you borrow (or find in your scrap bin) another CD/DVD drive to try?
maybe the drive is faulty.

You can't just go disabling things like that, and expect to have some
kind of logical whip-hand over the box of tricks.
Do you suppose that SCSI disc is in reality your DVD disc?

It used to work ok? Yes?
Well, what's changed? That's the key forensic evidence.
What has been changed inside the box?
What new software?

You must have at least a vague idea; unless, that is, your computer is
regularly out of your hands.

Check manufacturer's website for your model. Some Win7 update might have
blown it.

I guess it is/was some update or driver update which caused the problem,
but I don't specifically know which.

Anyway, I have done a system restore using a restore point from last
week, and now things are back as they should be.

The SCSI disk is no longer showing in Device Mangler, and my dvd writer
is now showing in windows explorer.

Thanks

Excellent! It's now just academic as to what caused it. Until, that is,
it happens again. I hope it wasn't a Windows update.

Get into device manager, right click on DVD/CDrom drives, right click
again on the hardware, and try search for hardware changes.
