Using a laptop with a desktop monitor

Since my computer died, I am using my laptop. What I would like to do
is just use the monitor screen and just close the lid on the laptop.
What settings do I change so the laptop will close and turn off it's
screen?

I ended up disabling my laptop screen once before screwing around
without really knowing what each settling is for. I would rather ask
than using my usual trial and error method. (mostly error)

Thanks

depending on laptop, you might find a function key that does it.
otherwise, try looking in power management and find where it asks what to
do when the lid closes.
I usually left mine on.

Depends somewhat on the make and model of the laptop.
First off, in the Power settings in Control Panel, look in the left-hand column and click on "Choose what closing the
lid does." Under the Plugged In column, choose "Do Nothing" (and the On Battery side, if you want to).
Then, with the monitor plugged in, you can use whatever Fn+<key> to move the output from the laptop to the monitor. Then
close the lid, and you're good to go.

Depends on what you set the Power Options to when you close the lid. As
to what "Fn"+Fkey you press to set the external monitor as the only one
is determined by the laptop manufacturer.

(On this XP netbook [Samsung NC20] it's Fn+F4.) The function key will
have a blue symbol looking like a laptop, a monitor, or both.
