thank you one and all, the problem is now cleared. I ran AdAware, then
Spybot. Spybot found it, as well as a few other possible dangers. Since then
I also installed Malwarebytes which looks very capable so I will run that
one regularly from now on.
I do have a backup system over my LAN to a Ubuntu pc but it has been off
line for a rebuild for a while now so no very recent restore option.
Pretty sure I got the bug while searching for a no-cd crack for an old game
Myst5, even though I virus check anything I download. Anyone here know a
safe source for things like this? I have a few very old games I would like
to run from copies like this.
Once again I thank you all for your support

I subscribe to PC Answers, who rate the above very highly too.
Thanks John :)

You get what you pay for is a put down? Touchy, touchy,
touchy.
Yes, in the context you used it......

"Wow, I don't believe some of the "advice" you've be given. Most
of the "free" stuff (like Avast) fall into the "You Get What You
Pay For" category with any 'New' malware out there.

I am certain that if you do that sort of thing you will get malware on your
PC - I do and it doesn't matter because I pay for good Internet Security
software and can always get rid of it easily enough. I wonder what it was
that you had? From the description I thought it might have been Vundo but
that is a bit harder to get rid of than you indicated: if it was Vundo, you
might still have it because things like restores don't get rid of it. I
reckon the best tip I can give is that the safest source is to try to ensure
that you get stuff from the originator and not secondary sources. Saved
games, demos and so on are notorious for being corrupted by people who want
to annoy you.

Nasty :( ...Mike H. you have my sympathy.

The best , most comprehensive ..free...Anti-Malware
scanner prog is Malwarebytes here.

It found a really nasty problem like yours which many other Progs did not.

I have a new test I'm running now. I did a clean install of Windows 7 and
Microsoft Security Essentials on my 20 year old niece's laptop. She will
click on or download anything. Every time I go to "tune up" her computer
there are a multitude of things in her start up routine and when I query her
on them she usually replies with something like, oh yeah I needed that to
watch some video but I never use it any more...etc etc.

So, it's been a couple of months and I haven't seen her computer....will
look at it this week as she is finishing up her semester in college. If the
computer is running well and not full of crap I will proclaim Microsoft
Security Essentials a success. She certainly has told me her computer runs
much better without the McAffee or Norton which her father had installed for
her.

On a personal note I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials since it's
release and I'm very pleased with it's seemingly low overhead and lack of
need for constant monitoring. I'm a pretty safe computer person, rarely see
any pictures of questionable moral value, and don't play games and stuff
like that. Not a single problem with MSE.

She sounds like she must be one of my Grandchildren..."click on or download

I too have been hearing good things about MSE, I've no experience with it
though.

There's nothing Acronis True Image will do that you can't do with Windows 7
yourself. No need to spend money to do regular backups including entire disc
images. I've got nothing against Acronis' products but they are not
manditory to accomplish a back up.
Unless you're trying to backup to a networked drive with Windows 7
Starter or Home Premium, as those two lack the capability to use a
networked drive for backups.

I agree, but Acronis comes as a free download with a Western Digital hard
drive.
http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp
Plus you can get a similar program with a Seagate or Maxtor drive.
Although it's called Disk Wizard, looking at the title page of the pdf
shows that it's powered by Acronis. Here's the link if you're interested:

Which falls into the 'You gGet What You Pay For' category ?
But then there are a few commercial virus programs that cause
problems... I won't name Norton by name but... ;-)

What about Samsung drives? I've got two of those in my box. Any free
goodies?
I don't know... try going to their website and see if they offer anything.

If you have a system with multiple drives, if any one is a Seagate/Maxtor or WD you will be able to
backup and restore images to any drive using dthe Drive imaging software from the respective drive mfg.

I have slaved in a WD/Seagate drive at times just so I could restore or create an image.

My Win 7 pc has been infected by some bug that opens an uninvited
advertising web page approx every 10 minutes. This happens whether I use
IE or Firefox. I ran a full Avast antivirus scan- nothing found. I
restarted Windows- no change. Whilst writing this with no internet page
open yet another one popped up.

Any suggestions on how to find this and eliminate it please? For example
is it possible to uninstall both IE and Firefox and get them again after?
Or might this bug be deep in the registry and survive that?

As I see it it's not only the nuisance of ad pages appearing but also one
day it might load a malicious web one with all the risks associated with
that.

TIA
Mike H
What you have doesn't sound like an actual virus, but still may be one.
Those pop up ads can be extremely annoying. Run Antimalwarebytes. It's
probably the best program of it's type at finding malicious software. Then
get a copy of Adaware and run that. Between the two, you shouldn't have
any more problems with that particular nasty.

Sounds to me suspiciously like VUNDO - a tricky one to get rid of unless you
have paid for a decent virus protection suite. Took me well over a week to
get rid of the bloomin thing. It has been detected several times on my new
PC but not managed to install itself. No free thing on the web (there are
plenty) gets rid of it - I tried loads of them. If you do pay for a virus
suite, get on to the site and look it up, you will be able to download a
procedure which will work.
