Taskbar Shortcut Icon Problem

B

Bill

I've created shortcuts to several programs and want to put them in the
taskbar. Normally, you just simply drag the icon to the taskbar.
Lately, however, when I drag the icon to the taskbar, it shows a red
circle with a slash through it. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

You are on an area on the task bar where you cannot drop the icon. There
is a >> symbol on the task bar that you'll have to drag to the right so
you can open up the drop zone on the task bar.

Since when I drag a shortcut to the Taskbar I get a flag saying "Pin
this item to taskbar", I concur with Big Steel's diagnosis.

But another method in Windows 7 is to start the program, then right
click on the resulting icon in the taskbar and select "Pin this program
to taskbar". Later, you can relocate it to your preferred location by
dragging it with the mouse.

If you want to place a shortcut to an executable on the taskbar
directly, just right click on the shortcut and select "Pin to Taskbar."
If you want to put it in a separate toolbar, you can drag and drop into
the toolbar area.

Why do youse guys keep finding easier ways to do things than the ones I
know about?

In other words, thanks for that suggestion.

WEll, that's an open invitation to practise that it's better to give
than to receive.

I do a lot of this; putting items in the Start/ All Programs list.
I used to just navigate in Windows Explorer to the folder and drop
things in there. But I recently found a cool way. You can drag from a
folder directly into the list; mouse over Start orb, All Programs etc.
even using the scroll bar to get to the right place. Provided you don't
take your finger off the left mouse button, Windows opens the road ahead
and displays messages about where you are.

Hi "Crash",

Thanks for your suggestion but when I right click on the shortcut
icon, I do not see a "Pin to taskbar" option! I'm using Win7, 64-bit
system.

What program does your shortcut point to? Is it an executable?

The three are: FileLocatorLite, Convert, and 123 Free Solitaire. All
three are executable files! The one interesting fact about these three
is that when I was able to get them in the taskbar, all three would
remain until about the second or third computer restart, then all
three icons in the taskbar would change to "white" icons and I'd have
to start the process all over again. Now I can't seem to get them to
the taskbar at all!

Sorry. I don't have any of those, and it is hard to tell what they are
with no extensions. I do have FileLocatorLite under a different name:
Agent Ransack. When I locate "AgentRansack.exe" in Explorer and right
click on it, I get the "Pin to Taskbar" option, which works fine. I can
also create a shortcut and pin that to the taskbar. I don't know why you
cannot. Perhaps some security software is interfering.

Windows7 didn't do away with the Quick Launch toolbar. It's still there...
Right-click the taskbar, select "Toolbars", new, and browse to
C:\Users\(your profile name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Then just drag your shortcuts to the new Quick Launch section.

Again an easier method :)

I usually open the Start Menu folder from the orb and navigate a bit.

I just made a shortcut to FileLocator Lite on my desktop, right clicked
on it, and found in the menu both Pin to Taskbar and Pin to Start Menu.

And a few minutes later, still in this thread, I was looking to see if a
shortcut to FileLocator Lite has Pin to Taskbar in its context menu, I
discovered there's also a Pin to Start Menu in the menu :)

Hi Gene,

I elected to "unpin" my FLL icon from the taskbar, went to my Program
Files>FileLocatorLite, clicked on it and I then saw the "Pin to
Taskbar" option, clicked on it and it indeed appeared in the taskbar!
Hopefully it will STAY there! BTW, this option does NOT appear with my
Convert and 123 Solitaire. Thanks!

What are the filenames, including extensions, for Convert and Solitaire 123?

Hi "Crash",

I have apparenty found my problem with Convert amd 123 Solitaire! I
opened each of the *.exe files and noticed that when I right-clicked
on the file>Properties>Compatibility, the "Run this program in
compatibility mode for:" was set to "Windows XP" (my old system). When
I changed it to "Windows 7", the "Pin to Taskbar" option appeared!
Thanks to all!

Aha! Pinning isn't available in XP. Glad you solved the mystery.
