Acer provide ways to restore the computer without disks. I've had causeDevice Manager reports two driver files for the keyboard.
I found a possible third file by running Autoruns. A
file comparison says that all three files are identical to
to their namesakes in my desktop Win7 computer.
I disabled the touchpad in Device Manager. The input
I would try reinstalling if I had an original installation
disk. Acer laptops do not come with installation
disks: users are advised to burn one immediately after
purchase. Unfortunately this advice was disregarded
in favor of the alternative of burning a disk image
(Acronis) with more basic programs a couple of months
after the purchase. The laptop is now running from
such a reactivated disk image.
I suspect that keyboard repair is not so simple as
the repair sites on the net promise (many of them
suggest that you can do it yourself), but I will look
into this matter next week.
Thanks once again for all the helpful advice!
to use this method once or twice and can assure you that it works.
It uses the hidden recovery partition. Not sure why Acer have removed
the original page from their website. (The above is from the
waybackmachine internet archive)
Restoring the operating system
How do I reinstall Windows?
If your software fails to respond or the system is infected with
malware, please use the following steps:
Prior to reinstalling Windows, undo the changes that may cause the
problems. Please, visit our knowledge base article Using System Restore
in Windows XP, Vista and 7.
If the problem persists, use the recovery software to restore Windows to
the original factory state:
Make a backup of personal data, as the recovery process will erase
all your files, such as email and photos.
Power on your computer. When the Acer logo is displayed, press and
hold the ALT key while pressing repeatedly the F10 key. Release the keys
when a message displays that Windows is loading files.
After the system recovery program has loaded follow the prompts to
reinstall the operating system.
In case the recovery software does not start, you need to use
Recovery DVDs or CDs; please visit our knowledge base article Recovery
using CDs or DVDs.
