Question on windows sounds

D

Don

Probably stupid question here,

I came from using Vista Ultimate 64 bit, to using Windows 7 Home Premium 64
bit. Installed earlier this week on a new computer build, so it is a fresh
clean install on a new hard drive.

Back on Vista, whenever I double clicked to open folders, or clicked links
on websites, I would hear a clicking sound on Windows.

After doing my new build this week, I notice I no longer have a sound when
doing the above.
Now what is really strange, this morning at some point, all of a sudden I
started hearing the same clicking sound just like I used to. But after a
reboot, it is gone again.

Am I missing something here, or do I just have a Windows 7 install that is
acting up a little?

Not a big issue, just a little annoying.

Thanks for any help here,

Right-click on desktop > Personalize > Sounds
There you can choose from different sets of sounds
or customize each sound individually.

Thanks, I had checked in there but did not really see anything specific to
what I am talking about, ie opening folders, clicking on links...

It's Windows Explorer - Complete Navigation.

Thanks - yes from there I can assign a sound, and when IE completes opening
the web page I get that sound. But not the clicking sound I normally heard
when actually clicking on a link, or opening folders.

On mine it's 'Start Navigation' that has the clicking noise but it only
seems to work when navigating in the left pane of Explorer, not IE.

Hmm interesting, I show a sound assigned to " start navigation " but when I
click the test button, I do not hear any sound...

Maybe something's been changed.
How about assigning another sound scheme and then re-assigning Windows Default scheme.

Gave that a try and still nothing. I still do not hear a sound when I test "
windows navigation start".
I think that must be my problem...

Ok I think I got it figured out!
I checked the settings for my Creative X-Fi Fatality soundcard, and it was
set to game mode. Just for grins I changed it to entertainment mode, and now
the click sound is back!
Go figure!!
We'll see if it sticks.

Thanks for all the help,

Well apparently it is not, after a reboot I lost the clicking sound again.
At least now I know, must be related to my soundcard drivers/software,
rather than windows itself....

When the Windows no sound problem occurs, the symptoms include users do not
hear
any Windows system sound even though the volume control on speakers have
turned on,
and all audio mixers and EQs is not muted
Users cannot hear sound from mouse start navigation clicks, Windows startup
sound,
messenger’s user online or incoming message notification alert and etc.
Even Flash video clips hosted on YouTube, Google Video, Dailymotion,
CNet Video, MetaCafe, and etc will not output the sound, even though video
playback fine without problem.

Thanks for the link, looks tempting but not sure I would be comfortable
installing a 3rd party program that makes registry changes.
Only thing I am really missing is the navigation start sound - I may give it
a try though.

Like most registry fixes, it is usually straightforward,
if only you knew where to find the errant key.
Still a bit more Googling might throw up something.
It seems a common problem.

Ok I think I finally got it figured out.
For my X-Fi soundcard, I had to disable " sound blaster enhancements" in
the speaker properties tab.
When it is enabled, no start navigation sound ( clicking ), when I disable,
that sound is back...

Strange - but thanks to all who offered assistance!

In my computer, running Win7 32 bits, there are different files with the
name
Windows Navigation Start.wav
each one in a different folder, corresponding to the different Windows
themes.

For Windows standard theme the folder is:
C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-ie-internetexplorer_31bf3856ad364e35_8.0.7600.16385_none_49f29d63f2540eb7
(Should be slightly different for your 64 bits W7).
The file is 12 kB size.

You may like to find it in your system and test if it sounds OK.

If so, the problem is with the association in the System sounds scheme,
which you can change with the mmsys.cpl method described in the link above,
via Control Panel>Sound systems or Right-Click on
desktop>Personalize>Sounds, etc.... they all lead to the same place.

Start navigation sound is one of the last options, but it is certainly
there, and that same sound is used both for internet links and for opening
folders.

Hope it helps :)

enhancements, once I did all was well...
