Printer works in 32 bit but not 64 bit?

Canon i250, uses Windows drivers and an add on module from Canon. Works OK
in Win 7 32 bit but not in Win 7 64 bit, here it shows as an unspecified
device in Devices and Printers with no drivers loaded. Have noticed a few
other anomalies between versions but trying to sort one at a time!

O.K., so the printer worked on 32 bit (with, I'm guessing, 32 bit
drivers installed), but is not working in 64 bit!! Have you got the 64
bit drivers installed?? From the 64 bit disk or from internet!

Canon website says it works with Win 7 drivers so none available from them.

<snipped the jumbled mess to top- and bottom-posted content>

If true, have you added the printer using the wizard? Do you see the
printer listed on your Windows 7 x64 platform?

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/suppo...ultifunction/i_series/i250#DriversAndSoftware
Select Windows 7 (x64) for the OS.

It shows an x64 download file. It also mentions to use this driver
requires you to visit the Windows Update site to ensure you have the
base driver for the device. You didn't mention if you have the printer
listed on your Win7 x64 platform. You didn't mention if it was powered
on and connected and you visited the Windows Update site. Maybe that
will help.

Is the printer connected (USB)?
Is the printer powered on?
Is the printer listed in Device Manager under USB devices?
Is the printer listed as a Printer device in the Control Panel?
Have you visited the Windows Update site?
Did you try installing the x64 driver listed at Canon's site?

http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0900005117/01/i250easysetup_us.pdf

Did you follow step 6 where you power on the computer but leave the
printer powered OFF? Did you use the supplied software disc?

It's worth pointing out that Canon do not (and never have) offer Win7
64-bit support for their older models. There are several instances,
especially with scanners, where Canon openly state full compatibility
with 7-64, but in reality it is impossible to get them to work.

Interestingly, Canon's own UK web page for this printer neatly omits
7-64 from the supported OS list.

I had to throw away a perfectly good dot-matrix
printer (Fujitsu DL5800) because there were no
drivers for the Winoes7 64bit.

I feel your pain.

Why? Did you try creating a home network in which printers are shared?
It should have worked. I am using LaserJet4 in a Home Network
Environment and it works fine though it is getting very expensive to run
it. It is cheaper to buy a new faster printer and that is exasctly what
I have done. I bought Color LaserJet CP2025 and it is much better.

It has no connection for a network. It's a 1992
model.

No but what I was saying is that attach the printer to the computer that
had the driver including those computers that were running old windows,
ideally Windows98SE, Windows 2000 etc etc. Then create a network to
connect with that computer (not the printer) and treat that computer as
a server with printers and folders sharing enabled.

Perhaps it wouldn't work but it was a good try.

I like to try different ways of connecting things.

Anyway not to worry because the OP seems to have solved the problem.

Coincidentally, I've been trying to find the EasyPrint Photo software
for my Win7HPx64 laptop (eppx-win-4_1_0-en.exe) for use with my Pixma
iP3000. I have an old version of the program installed on my XPH-32bit
PC, but the HD on that just crashed and I needed to print some photos
out. EasyPrint does this well enough for my purposes and very simply.
Although I still have the original CD, the program on it is incompatible
with Win7x64 and fails to install (fortunately Win7x64 found a driver
when I connected the printer up for the first time).

But eppx-win-4_1_0-en.exe isn't available on the Canon UK website. It
is on the US and Australian websites (and many others), but I can't
download it from those sites - no doubt it detects my IP as being in the UK.

I wonder what Canon's logic is for this discrimination?

To make you go out and buy a newer model. That's OK. I emailed Canon and
told them I was going to have replace my scanner, but I would not be
considering a Canon one because of their policy of not supporting it
when it reaches adolescence.

I find it strange that Canon won't allow you to download from other
countries' web sites. When I first got this 64-bit computer, I
downloaded all the necessary drivers from its US host, since they said
they were compatible. Installed them successfully only to find out they
didn't work.

You could try this since it worked with XP, but I haven't tried it with
Win7.

1. Turn off the printer
2. From the Control Panel, remove the printer.
3. Close the Control Panel.
4. Turn off the computer.
5. Turn on the printer.
6. Start computer.

With the printer connected, Windows should recognise it (as a printer)
and load the generic drivers. It won't however help with any other
printing software. You'll have to find compatible software from
elsewhere and install in manually.

If that doesn't work, try this.

1. Switch on printer.
2. Open Device Manager.
3. Under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers heading, double click USB
Printing Support.
4. Under the Driver tab, click Update Driver and select the Automatic
Search button. (Make sure you're connected to the Web.) Follow the
instructions.

It beats me why Windows hasn't installed the generic drivers for it
automatically, but then that's Windows for you.

But eppx-win-4_1_0-en.exe isn't available on the Canon UK website.
Yes it is! I did a little more investigation after my previous post
and when I specified my current Canon printer, which is an MP610, I
was offered eppx-win-4_1_0-en.exe.
I wonder what Canon's logic is for this discrimination?
Maybe, Canon didn't test eppx-win-4_1_0-en.exe on older model
printers. Or maybe they did and 4.1.0 didn't work with an ip3000!

I think you might have meant stationery. But anyway, I can think of at
least two other better ways to do so. *Much* better...

I suspect stupidity rather than malice. Their search engine is a mess.
I can find a copy of the program on the canon-europe site, but
not listed under iP3000 downloads.

md5sum e44e8adef70092fb4dbf3a13f63a1d7b

I took a quick look inside the file with 7ZIP, but didn't find anything
of immediate value in there (as to what models it might or might not
support).

The only thing worse than this, is trying to look through an HP 300MB+
printer download, and trying to figure out how it works. Canon needs to
bloat this out by a factor of 5, if they want to catch HP.
