I recently partitioned my hard drive with Vista on part of it. Then I installed 7 on the new partition. All was going well as I installed updates. A re-boot was required after one update.

I got the error message in the title and let Windows do it's thing. I don't have the exact wording of all the lines (!) that appeared, but it seemed Windows was fixing a lot of errors.

When it finished, the operating system took over and all went well once again. The error message appeared after each reboot. It "fixed" far fewer things each time. It did not matter if I was booting into Vista or 7.

I ran a battery of tests on my WD hard drive with WD's tools. The drive is only a few months old and is one of their Scorpio 5 year warranty drives. All the tests passed.

Now what? It seems nothing is wrong once past the process of Windows fixing things. But, it needs to fix things after every re-boot.

One thought. Grab a free hardware monitor and check the temperature of the hard disk.

Have you tried running chkdsk to see if that helps any? If your unsure how to initiate a scan then just right-click on your HDD, choose properties, Tools and then error checking. Make sure you tick the box to repair broken sectors and then ok it. You should then be able to schedule the scan to run the next time you reboot.

Will run Chkdisk to see what things are found. Since this was a fresh install of things, I am considering just trying again to install things. Vista first, then 7.

I'm running a long test in DOS with the tools WD provides on their website.

Just went ahead and repartitioned the hard drive with the drive's manufacturer's software. Did a clean install of both operating systems. No more problem.

Had I not just installed the operating systems, I would have tried the operating system's drive processes. Thanks for your suggestions!

One other thing about the way I originally partitioned the hard drive, I was using Vista 64 bit and installed Acronis Disk Director Suite 10.0. I read on one of the earlier posts that Partition Magic would not work with the newer file systems. Could that have been the source of my issue?

The problem definitely went away using the tools provided by the hard disk manufacturer. Sadly that process only works when you start over. I was hoping Acronis could be used as advertised.

Try the chkdsk /r first however if that doesn`t work...
Run the sfc /scannow and see what comes up,

PartitionMagic was bought by Symantic... you should be aware this program has not been updated since around 2003 and contains quite a few bugs, it should not be used. It very likely was the culprit here.

PartEd Magic...

Folks,

I was pa-rousing the interwebs because of a hard drive message I'm getting on 7 Ultimate, and stumbled upon this thread. The advice to check drive temp is brilliant - I'll try that.

On another note, I've used an awesome partitioning app that works very well and is open source: http://partedmagic.com/.

Try that one. You just download the live ISO and boot from it on CD. It boots quick and works very well.

Cheers,
iX

Having the same issue

I have been having the same problem for 2 days now..It tells me that it is checking Drive C for inconsistancys..but 2 hours go by and it still says it..not sure if the screen froze or it was still running..no way to tell..I had to manually turn it off and start it again..only this time I hit the enter key to stop it from running so i could figure out what is going on..My laptop is 2 months old. Here are my specs..There has to be a reason why this would just start doing it out of the blue? I also have Sony Vegas Pro on my computer as well..I was having a problem with my video card and Dell walked me through that to fix it..
