Old Ghost backups access in Windows 7.

P

Peter Jason

I have Windows 7 SP1.

Recently I found a cache of my old DVD Ghost backups that I want to
access for some old photos that have gone missing.

These Ghost backups were made in 2001 & 2006, and used Ghost 3 (as far
as I can remember), and at the time I had Windows ME and then Windows
XP SPx.

Presently I use Norton Ghost 15.

Is there any way to do this?

Before posting here, did you try to 'explore' the old Ghost images
with your newer Ghost program? If so, how did it go? If not, why not?

I can't get Ghost15 to even see the DVD images, which have Ghost2003
names like "CDR00001". ImgBurn does an "unknown file format" as does
Nero10, & PowerISO copies the image only. Nowhere in Ghost15
instructions is there any reference to Ghost 2003.

Have you looked for Ghost 2003? You should be able to run it by
selecting Win95 in Compatibility mode. I found:

http://garcya.us/norton-ghost-2003-free-download/

There's a link to a website that offers a *.rar file there for download.
It's in Romania, and slow. I scanned the compressed file, it was clean.

Good luck,

If your old backups are .gho or .ghs images, then from what I see on
the Norton forums Ghost v12 was the last version to support those
formats and you're pretty much out of luck.

If your backups have the .v2i extension, then I think Ghost v9 is the
oldest version that can read them, except if they were created with
medium compression, in which case v12 might be the oldest version that
can read them.

Your best bet might be to get ahold of the version that you used to
create those backups and use it to extract the files.

So the big unanswered question is, exactly which version of Ghost did
you use to create your backups and what file extension(s) do they
have?

Thank you, but when I try to run Ghost2003 on this Windows7 machine I
get:

*****
The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows
you're running. Check your computer's system information to see
whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the
program, and then contact the software publisher.

Emulating to another OS in the properties dialogue makes no
difference; I tried them all.

They have the *GHO extension. I'm taking my old XP machine in to the
fixit shop to get it running so as to try Ghost2003 there. I'll
report back later.

My assumption was that you'd boot from your Ghost 2003 CD, not run it
in Windows 7.

How about trying Ghost Explorer ? I found a version here.

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/products/ghost/utilities/

GHO_Explorer.exe 744 KB 2/13/2009 12:00:00 AM

In a virtual machine, I installed Ghost 2003 (bought a copy years ago,
for some unknown reason), and made a test backup with it. If I
run GHO_Explorer.exe and point it at the .gho file, it allows browsing.

I don't know how useful that is, but it's a start.

I didn't test GHO_Explorer.exe in Windows 7. I was testing in
a virtual machine, with an older Windows environment.

Many thanks. I downloaded the GHO_Explorer.exe on my machine
(Windows7 SP1) and put the old 2001 Ghost backup into the optical
drive, and IT WORKED..!

I am presently checking all the old files for the ones I want.

This has saved a lot of trouble because otherwise I would have to go
back to the DOS "Ghost2003.exe" and hack thru all the old ways - non
of which I understand.

Thanks again! Peter
