No sound from HP laptop internal, built-in speakers

Internal, built-in speakers do NOT work. External speakers connected to the audio-out jack DO work

I have performed ALL of the tests from the HP support site including the basic tests such as default speakers, etc. Still no sound.

Note that I have attempted to update the driver: Realtek High Definition Audio.
The result is "The best driver software for your device is already installed"

Did it work in the past and suddenly stop working or is this a new machine or new OS install?

It could be the driver. If it is a new audio driver then try the option in Control Panel > Device Manager to rollback the driver. Also check device manager for missing/disabled drivers because it is possible for a motherboard driver to be needed for audio to function

Of course it may just be muted or the volume off.

If it worked fine one day in W7 and then did not work the next then a hardware problem is also a real possibility.
