I'm confused by this statement that you've made because in the "Both
laptop &
desktop Vista & W7" thread you stated-

"Both laptop and desktop Vista PCs, including the new W-7 will no longer
work with dial-up. What MS update did this to our 3 PCs? Yes, it still
works on XP but we don't use the old XP PC anymore. How do we get dial-up
back on Vista and W-7?"

So are you now stating that you've had a problem getting online with a
dialup modem since the beginning.
No. We never had a problem with our dial-up modems in the past on any of the
PCs. It happened suddenly to the 3 newer ones. When XPs were checked, they
could still get online with the dial-up ISP. IOW the older PCs with XP that
we don't update anymore were not affected. A System Recovery (not restore)
has the Vista desktop back online with dial-up. Now it will be many hours
reinstalling software on it.......... :(

If so why state in the other thread
that your modem problem just started, what's the reason for misleading us
about when your dialup problem started?
I don't know what you mean. We haven't had any modem problems in the past.

As the Ultimate Windows Tweaker only transfers ownership to folders
I thought I could create a folder and put any file inside to be processed.
Well that doesn't work because the Ultimate Windows Tweaker does not
recurse inside folders. The command has the /r switch missing:
<snip>

I haven't tried it myself to see if it works, but I see that the
Ultimate Windows Tweaker does indeed have commands for Take Ownership
of drives, folders, and files. Are the two of you saying that it can't
take ownership of files even though it has a specific context menu
command for that?

You are correct, I missed the file setting.
On the Additional Tweaks page the Take Ownership setting is
split between Drives and Folders and Files only. I missed the
lower setting when I posted earlier.
On taking a second look and selecting the files option the context
menu now has Take Ownership listed on Drives, folders and files.
I tried Taking Ownership of a thumb drive and there was no change to
the owner (System) or any files on it.
The folder option works but only for the folder, any files inside the folder
are untouched.
The file option works on files but not exe files. The context menu is missing
when you right-click an exe file.
So it will do folders only and any file except an exe file.

That took me to Facebook and I didn't see anywhere to download anything on
the Facebook page. I'm not looking for filesharing software.
Anyone else ending up on Facebook, or is it just happening to Valorie *~ ?

I gave it a try and found that a Business Week page opened while the
file was downloading. Tried it a second time and a Realtor.com page
opened while the file was downloading. If I kept at it, I suppose a
Facebook page would come up eventually. Tried it one last time and a
page for mycollegedegree.com opened during the download.

Thanks for confirming. Good info to know, especially the 'no exe'
limitation.

Maybe Valorie *~ has some malware onboard.
I think I would bet on that, but she probably only uses 'freebies' which
often won't detect the newest Malware.

She should run some of the better on-line scans, Spysweeper is a top-rated
product with a scan available. SuperAntiSpyware is pretty good too.

Those are from MediaFire, "normal" popup blocker setting let them through.

I remember a long thread ( quelle suprise! ) on a microsoft vista newsgroup
where Valorie, as she was then, complained about an orphaned context menu
entry still on her computer even though she had uninstalled the program.
I think it was SuperAntiSpyware (or maybe Spybot). Same old story of plenty
of help but all of it seeming to confuse her even further. Of course it was because
everyone trying to help was a 'techie' talking technical stuff and all she wanted was
help that a normal person could understand.
Back then she used to get her next door neighbour's son to fix her computer because
he was ' a geek '. I wonder what happened to him.

I earned my living with large mainframe systems, so I wasn't much of a
techie on PCs. Since I retired, I have spent a lot of time with all the PCs
around my neighborhood and become pretty good at it; no one has ever had her
problems. That's why I suspect Malware.

I've read her threads but since there's never any useful information given,
I usually just ignore her problems. Just once I'd like to see something
like, "I installed a trial version of xxxx and decided I didn't like it."
Any information would be helpful. When she does give some information, it's
spoon-fed.

In the tests I've seen, the freebies do as good a job as the paid
stuff, and often better.

I recommend Avira or Avast as antivirus, and MalwareBytes and
SuperAntiSpyware as malware scanners. All are free for personal use.
