how to disable taskbar thumbnail preview?

I went to group policy editor and enabled "turn off taskbar thumbnails". I
turned off and on my computer. The setting does not apply. I still see the
thumbnails.

Also, I disabled notifications which pop up when you hover over an icon on
the taskbar. Nope, they still appear.

Why group policy settings do not apply?

At my user account I am the administrator so I have control over the
computer.

How can I solve this problem?

I simply dont wnt thumbnail previews.

Simple, if you quit using the Aero themes the thumbnails go away. What I'm
wondering why anyone would go to all of this work to get rid of them. They
certainly seem innocuous to me and I'm certainly no fan of bling for
bling's sake.

I dislike those popup thumbnails as well. When I first installed
Win 7 I searched for ways to turn them off, but none of the
methods I found on line worked.

The workaround that I use is to delay the popups for, say, 20
seconds. That way they aren't popping up every time my mouse
pointer wanders down there for a second.

Here are two cites that tell you how to do it:
