Desktop icons disappeared after an update !

Jesus I've only had this PC a week and Windows 7 does not impress me..
Just applied a windows 7 update that was 'waiting' and on re-boot all the
desktop icons have gorn !!
Start button and taskbar ok...Tried the Control Panel/Appearance and
personalization/Personalization/Change desktop items/Ticked all the items
Apply...ok/ Bugger all difference....Tried a restore it took just before
the windows update...bugger all difference
Tried a restore from a few days ago...now ok....not impressed

If you right-click the desktop, select View >, there are various options
available for desktop icons, including whether to show them or not.

Nice one..
Undid the restore...back to no desktop icons
Right click
View....'Show desktop items' was not ticked
Ticked...now they are back ok...so simple when somebody tells you how !!!
