Data Storage

I realize that this is off topic for this forum but I hope that someone
can point me to a place that might have an answer. I have a Dell
desktop running Win 7. I have started the Dell Data Safe Local Backup
program. I selected an option to consolidate previous backups. The
program has now been running for 7 hours and the progress bar still says
1%. The backup is located an external HD and there is constantly
activity being shown on it.

I have just spent two hours in the Dell support site trying to get any
answer with absolutely no luck.

My question is - Is this time normal or am I likely in some processing loop?

I'm not familiar with the Dell Data Safe, but it sounds as though the
"consolidate" option might be de-duplicating the contents of all your
backups to save space, this could certainly take a long time, also I
suspect it's the sort of operation that if you cancel it, could leave
you with a set of useless partial of backups.

If you can leave it chugging a way for a day or two, I think you
probably should.

Thanks for the response. I let it run overnight. Since there is no
Cancel option I used Task Manager to stop it. I looked at the site
where is stored the backup files and there were 7 version of backups. I
guess it was consolidating all 7 of them. I deleted all but the last
two and will try it again.
