Wireless adapter won't work?

Win 7 Ultimate 32 bit, Ralink USB wireless adapter. model not specified,
just says 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB adapter, 3Com wireless modem/router.
This is the adapter:

and the 2 reviewers say it works perfect with Win 7.
If I just plug it in Windows sees it, installs a driver and tells me it's
working but I have no connection, have rebooted PC and router.
The WLAN LED on router is lit and have checked firewall settings.
Installing the Ralink drivers and utility exactly the same thing.
Another PC using XP connects easily using a 3Com wireless adapter which came
with the router.
Could it be it's not compatible with the 3Com router?

Try the Ralink USB adapter on the XP system. If it doesn't work on that,
it's either faulty or not compatible with your router.

Works OK in XP so thought it was a Win 7 driver issue. Downloaded most
recent from Ralink but it didn't make the slightest difference.

You may have to uninstall the current drivers, be they windows supplied
or third party. (Likely in safe mode) Then install the correct drivers
before you plug in the Ralink unit. The reason for this is to
(hopefully) update the detection process via the correct drivers before
it sees the new hardware.

I run Win7 Ultimate on my tablet PC and been having trouble with ralink wifi. I assume you guys have the same issue as me, so the problem is not with the wifi itself but the drivers and capability with win7. Reason why I am so sure about that is this. Finally last night I decide to try Ubuntu 10.10 notebook edition. It’s a live CD (you can run it without installation) and open source (free of charge), and I was able to use my wifi without any problems. Signal was maximum strength and I didn’t even install the drivers because they are included. So win7 and ralink drivers are not compatible for some reason.
