Windows Live Mail is very slow to check mailboxes and download email from servers

I've noticed that my new Windows 7 + Windows Live Mail PC takes a long time
to determine the number of messages in the POP server mailboxes for my
accounts andto download unread messages, whereas my Vista + Windows Mail
laptop does so much faster, using the same account settings. The number of
messages is identical because both PCs are set to leave messages on the
servers for 5 days.

Is this a know problem with WLM or something specific to my W7 PC? In all
other respects the PC is lightning fast - it displays pictures on web pages
quickly and downloads large files quickly, so it isn't a generalised slow
networking problem.

I can't tell you whether this is typical of WLM or not. I tried WLM
and didn't like it. I'm much happier with Outlook 2007.

But I do recommend that you try several of the many other e-mail
programs and newsgroup programs out there (many of which are
freeware). Find what you like best and what works best for you.

Is there a virus scanner involved. Some virus scanners seem to get in
between the email program and the email server, scanning the emails before
they are loaded into the email program. AVG comes to mind. It slows email a
bit, but at least everything is scanned.

I find Windows Live Mail very slow.
On my previous computer, running XP, OE + Avast virus scanner, OE opened and
mail arrived almost instantly.
Now I use W7+WLM+Avast everything is crawling.
WLM is slow to get going.

I have tried Thunderbird, but didn't like it.
It's no longer installed.
