On start-up, my Win 7 pro provides a sky-and-twig screen with five
labelled icons.

In order that I may read the labels with reasonable comfort, (how) can I
replace sky-and-twig with a single uniform colour
and/or increase the size of the labels?

I do NOT want to enlarge other things in Windows.

If you right-click on the desktop and then left click on 'view' it gives
you choice of large, medium or small icons. Is that what you need?
If not, after right-clicking take a look at the bottom item
'personalize'. You might be able to find a single colour for the
desktop background.

After reading his description, I immediately thought it referred to
the light blue screen with the white cartoon twigs that you see
briefly during startup.

I don't know how to change it.

Right click on empty space on desktop. Select Personalize.

Or, more simply, turn the wallpaper off. Right-click on an empty part of
the desktop, and select properties; you're on your own after that, as I
can't remember the W7 procedure for what's next. (In XP, there's a
desktop tab, which has a drop-down list for which wallpaper, with a
"None" at the top of the list.)

You're not W7 Starter edition, are you? I've heard that not being able
to change the wallpaper is one of it's limitations.

I don't see how adjusting the wallpaper, or even turning it off, is
going to help with the OP's situation. The screen I believe he's
talking about, which is also the screen shown at the tweak link above,
is displayed during logon, before the wallpaper is loaded and
displayed.

If it's a Dell, they had that stupid screen with the big icons. I
forget what Dell calls it, but It can be turned off and possibly
modified.

You are nearly right there; in mine, it is not briefly.
I don't know how to change it.
And, no doubt, right there.

The machine is a Fujitsu Laptop, Lifebook A532, with initial
customisation at my request by my supplier. The icons are useless but
harmless pictures, and the labels are in order Administrator, Guest1,
Guest2, J R Stockton, Superadmin.

I can easily enough live with it; but it is cretinous design and a
persistent annoyance.

Ok, gotcha. On my systems it's brief because I have them set to
auto-logon. On yours, it's waiting for you to select which account
you'd like to use.
And, no doubt, right there.

Did you try the logon tweak that someone else provided? It looks like
it should work.

I did not try one involving downloading code; I only run code from major
suppliers, code that I can understand sufficiently, and code widely
endorsed as good for the purpose.

I do write code for others to use, but it comes with the source files.

Ok, that's fine. I suppose it's comforting to know that a solution is
out there, even if it's out of your reach.

Then you must be rather limited in the utilities you have available to
you. In this case, you are going to be out of luck since the image you
wish to change is embedded as a resource file in one of the OS binaries
and the exact resource name is dependent on the screen resolution and
regional / language settings.
I do write code for others to use, but it comes with the source files.
Perhaps then, you can write your own utility to change the image.

Like the traditionally-stated power of a Rolls-Royce motor-car engine,
it is only necessary to have sufficient.

Indeed. But there is an alternative. I could rename my account to
something sorting before (IIRC) "Ad", thereby probably moving my own
icon and legend to clearer screen. But that's not good for guests T &
W, if installed.

No, because "Do nothing" is acceptable albeit not ideal.
