Windows 7 Professional 64 goes into update during shutdown operations ?

Why does my computer go into 'update' during shutdown operations, if no longer supported by Microsoft? After waiting 10 minutes or more while installing 16 or 17 updates, the computer reports that installation was not successful. My system/computer has done this 3 or 4 times - can I shut off this automatic update feature? How? Thank you.
