W7 & Word 2003 numbering problem

I started a family genealogy book (230pgs) years ago using a Template and Styles which I continue to add to.

I created a Numbering Style for the children of each family starting with 1. I have fought with this for years and am in pulling out hair.

I have tried every way to modify the Style. The numbers change will not stay in the format I want. I want a simple intent with restart numbering with each family. I have read the help files but get more confused.

I am wondering if I should delete this style from the template and try and create a new simple Style for the Children?

Any suggestions very greatly appreciated. See attachment.

I am just afraid it will mess me up forther. What happens if I screw up my template, and what happens to all those lists of children. Right now my document just will not hold the "Restart Numbering". I currently have 184 children which is not helpful.
