System shuts down after entering password

A friend asked me to take a look at his laptop but when I try to turn it on it asks for a system pass which looks like a BIOS pass. After you enter the password the whole system turns off.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Boot to a W7 Installation DVD. See if the hard drive is seen and if the OS is intact. May be hard drive problems.

If you can't even get that far then suspect other hardware: power issues, bad RAM.

If it will boot with W7 DVD and hard drive seems OK and has an OS then try the startup repair from the W7 Installation DVD.
