Some Crazy Temporary Behavior

With Win7 Professional, Service Pack One. Across all applications.
Select selects everything above pointer; Can't type ".", get ">"
instead; typed passwords not accepted. Then the problem goes away
mysteriously. Anybody else having a similar problem? Not many
applications open. Plenty of memory.

Your SHIFT key is sticking, or your keyboard is sending erroneous SHIFT
signal for some other reason.

Sounds like your shift key is getting stuck down!

There are a limited number of reasons why that would happen, and one
of them is nasty! ;-)

If it's not a sticky shift key then it's possible that your keyboard has
changed to another country's eg USA instead of UK. Go to Control
Panel\Clock, Language, and Region and click on Region and Language. Ensure
that your Regional Settings are those of your country. On the Keyboard tab
choose Change Keyboard and choose your own country's keyboard.

It is none of the things suggested. It can't be the shift key, since
the key with . and > is the only one to switch the UC and LC symbols.
It is not the keyboard choice because I have the function for
switching keyboard languages on my taskbar and it says US. Another
crazy thing that happens is that when I put the mouse cursor somewhere
and click the left mouse button, all the text I have written above it
is highlighted. I have also have had the current tab in IE start
cycling through the previously visited web pages for no reason at all.
Then after a frustrating few minutes, the machine goes back to normal.

This only started after I installed Service Pack 1. I wonder.

It's not SP1. I've spilled things on my keyboard and had only one key that
sent the wrong key-code.

Can you try a different keyboard (borrow one from a friend/neighbour)
or is it a laptop?

Don't Laptops still accept external keyboards?

Not meaning to be sarcastic, but it could be a coincidence.

I'll cite just one of several experiences I've had, to point out why I'm
serious. I once installed a new DSL modem and couldn't get it to work.
After trying for two hours, I called tech support, and learned that
their network had crashed two hours before :)

Typical shift key action to select text. Have you tried another
keyboard?
