I was taught to run a check disk on new hard drives and also on reloads of OS just to make sure there are no bad sectors and to make sure the install or the reinstall runs smoothly. Thoughts?

You can run chkdsk with windows.
1) If it is new one in the pc with no other hard drive with windows you unable to run chkdsk.
2) you can run chkdsk with pc already loaded by windows
