Program pinned to Start Menu Problem

P

Peter

I have a number of programs pinned to my Start Menu including MS Word.
Normally when I hover over the program name a list of recent files appears
to the right. This has suddenly stopped happening. It works fine with
Excel & PowerPoint. Just occurred to me to check what happens if I right
click on the program on the taskbar and the recent files are missing here
too. If I open Word and click on the Office Button all the recent files are
listed. Be grateful for any ideas of how to fix this.

Right click Start, Properties, Start Menu tab, Privacy ticks.

Followed by; Customize, Number of recent ...... to display.

I've checked this and it's all set correctly. As I said the strange thing
is that Excel etc. display correctly, It's just Word that's not working.

Well then, it's gotta be in Word itself. Try Settings; Display and
Advanced Display.

I'm using Word 7. Do you mean Word Options>Advanced>Display? Number of
recent documents is set to 17. Clicking on the Word Office button does show
the last 17 files used.

I have something similar to this which I've only just noticed.
Maybe it's the same thing.
Let me describe my phenomenon.

On my Pinned to Start Menu there's Notepad, Firefox, Media Centre and
Freecell all with a little arrow; and hovering over them gives an
expansion list of things.
But Internet Explorer (64-bit) has no arrow and doesn't produce any list.

Hhhmmm! Same problem?
Let's await someone else's comments.

There was a thread on this a while ago, but I lost the posts...

I remember they're called Jump Lists, googled that and came up with this
(again... this time I'm saving the info) which worked for me.

Hi, Joey.

Your memory is not quite perfect - but close. The final part of that thread
was from you on April 6, 2011, subject:
Found it; was: Missing 'recent item' from start menu shortcut

Rather than keep everyone in suspense, here's what you said there:

Knowing the thing is called a Jump List helped.

For anyone else who suffered this:

Jump List...that is corrupted in AutomaticDestinations-hidden system folder
is the likely solution.. To resolve and fix the issue, follow these steps:
1. Open Windows Explorer .
2. Type or copy and paste the following into the address bar:
%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
3. Identify files that are comparatively larger in size than the rest of the
file, such as files that have file size of 1 MB or more. Delete the abnormal
file.

Tip: If you do not want to retain the Jump Lists¹ recent items history on
all
applications, just delete all the automaticDestinations-ms files in the
folder.

4. The recent items functionality on Jump Lists will be restored. The recent
items on the Jump Lists will be re-added as the program is been used.
However, do note that the solution does not restore the previously pinned
items. So user will have to pin new items again.

And I found it quickly by typing "jump list" into the search box above the

Many thanks. I had two files greater than 1Mb and after deletion normal
jump lists returned both on the task bar and on the Pinned start menu.
Again thanks
