One had the driver supplied with windows, the other did not.
The Laptop likely has an OEM version of windows, and a generic driver
was defaulted to, since you say that you can print, even though the
printer is not listed.

The 5L may be using, for example, a postscript driver that is present in
the windows OEM version on the laptop.

Actually what you describe is a bit out of the norm. Usually, the
controller is identified, and later, perhaps after the next boot, a
printer or appropriate device pops up.
