NTFS Compression

Does anyone here use NTFS compression in Windows 7? I have lots of folders full of old documents that I don't often open, and they come to around 12GB.

If I enable compression on these folders will I reduce the overall performance of my computer, or will it just take a little longer when opening a document in that folder?

If it's the former than I will enable it on lots of storage folders on my laptop, as I can free up some disk space!

NTFS compression has been around for a long time, and it might be of use in some situations if you have limited space.
