Newsgroups, Windows live mail

I downloaded (customized) WLM, but only Windows Live Essentials is shown in
'Uninstall a Programme'. After what you said I r.c. on it and I get
'Uninstall/Change, but I did not go any further because the last thing I
want to do is lose my WLM. If I c. on it would I get the options which you
describe?
r.c. appears to be "right click"
c. appears to be "click" (left click)

I wonder what the purpose of the non-standard abbreviations might be.
I don't know, but it reminds me of the WE (Windows Explorer)
abbreviation awhile back and the confusion it caused.

I meant Apple itself.
I see. No, Apple doesn't do usenet. They have their own forums just
like MS does.
Sad really. It needs more open discussions.

First AOL stopped Usenet support. Then most of the ISPs in the USA and
elsewhere discontinued Usenet. Now MS has discontinued their service.
That pretty much leaves most computer users out of Usenet. I don't see
Apple in the newsgroups. Did they ever have groups on Usenet?
Yes, Macs had a few news groups eons ago........when my daughter got her
first Mac, I found them for her. But as she says, not much goes wrong
with a Mac, so don't need forums and the like.

Btw.......you got my paella dinner ready and waiting?? (G)

Thanks.
What if your car doesn't have an ashtray?

Does that mean you can never get rid of it?

Interesting. But see, I did find out new items to ponder.

For me on this old sun box, getting other mail programs or browsers is
pretty limited now.
Even upgrading to a newer version of Thunderbird is a total pain to
install properly.
It sounds like you need to upgrade your computer now and certainly
before you install Windows 7.

I had a "Dell" computer on which I was running XP Pro. I never used
Vista but decided to go for Windows 7 Ultimate for which knew I needed a
new computer.

I bought a new computer and created 3 partitions: C: D: E: which has
been my practice for many years. IE: C: for the operating system, D: for
programs and E: for Music .

After I installed Win 7 to C: I copied my D: files from backup to D:
drive and E: files from backup to E: drive.

On D: drive some programs needed to be upgraded before they would work,
but at least all the programs retained their settings, although Eudora &
Agent after I created new shortcuts, started downloading without ever
having been installed.

comp.os.mac.advocacy is one, but it is a cesspool.
Same as comp.os.linux.advocacy - full of rabid anti-linux morons who
seem to spend so much time there posting lies and personal insults for
no other reason than they must be being sponsored to do so.

Folks, I have a stupid question. - After going to this newsgroup via
Thunderbird, I now find that I can't get back to Thunderbird. When I click
on the icon for TB, I can only get to this newsgroup. (So, I can't see the
accumulating mail on TB, and can't get to the list of other newsgroups.) -
I must have clicked on something I shouldn't have, but i can't seem to
resolve the problem. Does anyone have suggestions?

Jim
I wish I could help but I despise TB. It was confusing and had too many
bells and whistles. It lasted about a week on my PC. I bought a new PC
with W-7 last year and it's sitting under a dust cover because WLM sucks.
Basically I have no email/newsgroup software on it so it's of no use to us
and I can't return it. We looked and couldn't find anything better than OE
or WM like I have on this Vista machine. I can't understand why MS wont let
us use OE or WM on W-7 PCs. These are most likely the last MS PCs we'll
own.

Valorie *~

BINGO!!!!!!!! Why else would MS not allow those buying W-7 use OE or WM?
They have no control here but do on their Forums.

WLM works fine for me. I can read newsgroup messages, post to newsgroups
and have my replies automatically be put at the bottom of a message.
That's
all I require in a newsreader. WLM can also combine binary files that are
posted
in pieces although I don't use that facility too often. What features do
other
people need that WLM can't provide?

Tom L
Try having all email messages from all email accounts come into one place
like in OE and WM.

Probably because MS has a) closed its newsserver, b) set up the web forums
and c) is trying to close Usenet itself...because it cannot control it...

With the multitudes of email clients and newsreaders to choose from, I
can't believe you weren't able to find something you can live with. I
suspect you gave up too early. Regarding email, what about web-based
email since you don't like any of the available clients?

I can't talk about Windows Mail, since I hardly used it at all,
but as far as I'm concerned, Windows Live Mail is (and even was)
*much* worse than Outlook Express.
How so? Like I said, I never got into OE much, but in my limited
experience, Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail look pretty much like
OE, and seemed to operate in similar ways.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

OE was great. Easy to use, and it quoted text, not like this POS. It is
claimed by "them" that it is not secure, but that sounds like BS from the
wise unknowing. I have used it for years, and still do without any issues.

You notice the criticisms aren't specific?

Why do you separate the operating system and programs on different
partitions? Most people who do that do it because they think that if
they ever have to reinstall Windows, they won't lose their installed
programs.

That is *not* correct. If you reinstall Windows, you will also have to
reinstall all your programs (with perhaps a rare exception).

And if E: is just for music, where do you put the rest of your data
files?

Excellent article actually. Not that I am a computer expert but I
certainly believe in keeping things simple.

And an xcopy command to duplicate your user files on an internal second
hard disk and/or an external hard disk is simplicity itself.

And what is more if one uses the right switches/parameters, the xcopy
command will do incremental duplication of files, copying new user files
plus any files that have been altered and are thus ready for archiving.

And you don't have to buy any other software or use freeware to use the
xcopy command.

You need new tinfoil hats! Do you really think MS is trying to shut
down the Usenet which has over 120,000 groups on it? They don't control
it. There are hundreds of Usenet servers out there. Where do you people
get these stupid ideas?

Valorie - I'll give you a hundred bucks for that computer that you don't
know how to use and is just sitting there gathering dust.

"Eternal September" is now a Usenet provider. But when AOL first
gatewayed to Usenet, most groups were flooded with crap postings
(like what we're now getting from WLM and what we had from egghead,
plus Google Groups). We old hands said "it's always September",
referring to the halcyon days when most Usenet postings came from
universities, so every September we had to break in a new crowd of
newbies.

Or I could have just sent you to
http://linux.rz.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/jargon/html/S/September-that-
never-ended.html
Yeah, I forget the Usenet Provider I use changed its name to that as a
reference to that. But yup, Stan sums it up for me quite nicely.
